Looks like my poncho will get a work out next week with rain predicted for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday..... oh the fun. Looks like I may make some miles as I do very limited stops in the rain and most of my 20 mile days have been in the rain."Dazed and Confused"

While I was pounding on my bag of fritos with my fist to crush them, the mrs asks "what in the world are you doing"? So I explain to her I am crushing them so they take up less space- and she answers: why don't you just use my rolling pin? Wow what a great idea- duh.
So here's what five days of food looks like for me. 9.5 pounds.

That's why I'll be bringing my Seattle Sombrero on our hike of the Laurel Highlands Trail starting on the 9th of April.
Have a good trip ! -

I telephoned the outfitter that will be doing our shuttle for the Laurel Highlands Trail and the Laurel Highlands State Park to find out about trail conditions in regard to snow and ice we might encounter on the trail. Both told us that for all practical purposes there is no snow on the ground. I guess I'll leave my snow shoes, Stabilicers, and gaiters at home and count on my hiking poles to help with any slipping and sliding I might do. We'll be leaving Saturday morning so don't expect any posts until after we get back from western PA on the 18th, or is it 19th?
I'll try to get some good photos so ya'll can see what the trail is like. We have shelters reserved for each night, but I'll be carrying our tent too. -

Enjoy it. I wish I was going. -

As for the toe nail thing, the one I lost due to last summer's hike still isn't fully grown back in yet on my left big toe. -

We had really high winds last night and today, I hate going out in the yard and seeing 4" diameter limbs 6' long stuck in the ground where I often hang a hammock at night.

I don't know what it is about bad weather that just seams to call to me, last night I was walking up and down the street trying out different insoles and shoes, the wind coming off the lake was whipping the tall pines around like switches, low temp was 44*, the kind of weather I love to be hunkered down in a holler listening to the wind howl, snuggled up in a warm sleeping bag, briefly thought about heading out for a night hike but 1.5 hours to get to the trail was too much.I may grow old but I'll never grow up.

I remember getting an Atlas book about 12 X 18 inch pages. I spent hours looking at it and looking up real places mentioned the black and white movies from the 1940s. I was supposed to be using for homework... but 8 was looking up Hawaii. Shangri-la. Etc.

In 2013 there was a guy thru hiking with two cars named Pringles. He would one car North then hike back to the South one. He always carried a tube of Pringles with him. Interesting character.
clarification - not technically a "thru" since he jumped around, but he did it in one year.

That's the Addams. Family outlook on rough weather. I have a book or two of those old cartoons.--

With the 2017 southern section hike completed, my buddy Smoking Sox and I are turning our attention to the Franconia Ridge - Franconia Notch to Crawford Notch.
Sox is thinking aggressive with 13 miles on Day 1 to the Galehead Hut and 14.7 miles on Day 2 to reach Route 302. I was thinking 2.6 miles on Day 1 to the Liberty Springs Campsite (2470' elevation gain from the notch), 10.4 miles to Galehead on Day 2, and the 14.7 miles on Day 3 to the finish.
Pros & Cons to both plans. The 3-day trip requires us to carry full gear the entire 27.7 miles even though we'll only need tents the first night. But it would be nice to have a leisurely first day climbing up to Liberty Springs and another light day hiking to the Galehead Hut. The 2-day plan means we're essentially doing back-to-back day hikes and only carrying snacks, water and mountain survival supplies.
Thoughts?Trudgin' along the AT since 2003. Completed Sections: Springer Mountain to Clingmans Dome and Max Patch NC to Gorham NH

Since the title is "Hiking Plans"....
I'll be down in Hot Springs, NC area grabbing some miles on this Section this weekend.
To the horror of many here, and on WB, we may do some TM at Brown Gap Saturday from 9 to 2 and then again at Max Patch somewhere later that day.... -
