In Horace Kephart's book Camping and Woodcraft, he shows how to make buckets and other containers out of bark. Some of his containers are quite large and can be used over a fire to cook with. Great book by one of the forefathers of the Great Smoky Mountains.

i watch part of it before my attention span wandered elsewhere.
i thot the grapevine was a neat trick.
but i gotta say...if i'm backpacking i got everything i need. if i'm dayhiking, i always have a rainjacket with me (even if its 100 degrees and zero chance of rain -- because if i take it out i just may forget to bring it the next trip) and a ball cap. in spring and fall i always have a fleece in case it gets cold. so rather than spend 5 hours (!) making a shelter i'd probably use that time trying to get unlost. i'd have to be an unusual set of circumstances to decide to devote that much time to making a shelter and hunkering down.2,000 miler -

I hate that too, like Bourne needed any motivation to be a bad ass.
