I love avocados. Dinner last night was homemade guacamole and Oatmeal Porter.Lost in the right direction.

I think many people try either mediocre commercially made guacamole or unsalted and/or unripe avocados and it ruined the whole avocado experience for them.
It would be like only experiencing precooked bacon which is really a poor substitute for bacon but will suffice in survival conditions.Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

I haven't hiked much... but I have done some short walks, 5-15 miles, with a pack. California, Texas, Mississippi and Maryland. All in the Boy Scouts. So I had to carry extra gear I would otherwise have never taken.
From about 35 to 80 pounds in those packs. Not conducive to doing much but striving to get to the camp site. I do remember from a hiking book, 'if you cannot carry on a conversation, you are waling too fast.'
Back in the 1970s I had a nice brown cordura nylon pack, 5000 cubic inches about, that was good. I liked it. I had purchased it from REI. Gave it away, and now cannot find another one like it.
So I bought an Alps Mountaineering 3900 cu. n. external frame pack. I was able to adjust it to fit me fairly well. Hiking with it will likely let me know what I misadjusted...
I recently drove over to Cheaha State Park... and realized what I had forgottn and what I had missed all these years. Its been about 1975 since I went camping... I hope to soon change that.
So howdee from an old Texan ! We sometimes smell funny, but its not stand up comedy.--

Hi, all. I live near Greenville, SC and like to section hike anywhere between Springer and Grayson Highlands. Seems we end up in the Roan area a lot. Four season backpacker, I don't mind hot or cold hiking. I almost always hammock camp because it is just more comfortable to sleep in and if the weather gets really bad it is easier to sit up and read in a hammock than in a tent.
Spent a month backpacking Europe with a rail pass and staying in hostels acting about 30 years younger than I am last year and had a ball. Hit Munich for Oktoberfest and checked out everything I could think of from Bosnia to Amsterdam.
Usually I try to keep things as light as possible but I like some comforts that are worth the weight. The most egregious being a Bon Jour ami matin 32 oz french press which weighs in at 8 oz after throwing away the handle and frame. Kicking back in the morning in the mountains drinking coffee enjoying the air and the view is my favorite part of backpacking. I have to carry slightly heavier cook kit too to supply the hot water.
Live on a hobby farm with my youngest daughter a half dozen Highland Cattle, a couple horses and a few bee hives.
Here is a shot of my set up behind Roan High Knob shelter to block some wind in January and one from my trip to Europe. Virginia in Feb. Summer set up near Blackstaff Cliffs. My friend Harvey. Sunset in the Bavarian mountains.
will have to work on this adding pics thing,The post was edited 5 times, last by wlb007 ().
