Interesting article in this week's Bloomberg Business Week about the Atlanta Braves stadium financing and their ability to get local governments to pay (from A to Majors).
One of my students once did an economics paper on Red McCombs, the former owner of not only the San Antonio Spurs but also the Minnesota Vikings. Apparently when the SA city government built the Alamodome, Red stepped up and pledged to the city council he would install the kitchen facilities in return for the concession rights for a number of years. He didn't have to put up a dime.
Weeks later he sold the above package deal to a vender (company name escapes me) for several million dollars...again without installing as much as a can opener.
The public at large and various media folks expressed outrage, not at Red but at the SA city council.
Beware Raiders fans, rumour has it Red is in the market for moving the team to San Antonio.
Lest we forget.....
