The Red Sox pitching is so bad right now that Rick Porcello (ERA 13.5) could not even get Chris Davis out

Porcello has had a roller coaster career, so maybe this will just be one of the off years. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

So happy for Chris Davis. Even though he is being paid $161 Million to do what most of us dreamed of being able to do for a living, at some point you just had to feel for him.

stat of the day.
joey votto made his major league debut in 2007.
he has played in 1,592 games.
he has had 6,828 plate appearances.
last night he popped out to first for the FIRST TIME.
(in 13 years he has grounded out to first 341 times and lined out to first 15 times.)
edit to add: i think the fact that they can come up with a stat like this is much more impressive than the stat itself.2,000 milerThe post was edited 1 time, last by max.patch ().

Had a great weekend. Friday night youngest son hit a moonshot home run in the District Championship game (would have been out of any major league ballpark). After that he got the Harper treatment. The next two times he came up the opposing coach intentionally walked him (once with runners on 1st and 2nd, the other with runners on 2nd and 3rd which made a little more baseball sense).
Then Saturday we went with to visit the Governor and First Lady at the Governors Mansion since he is valedictorian of his high school. Wife took lots of pictures of the gardens outside and the weather was great. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

red sox ban the video game "fortnight" from the clubhouse.
article also goes on to say that david price got his carpal tunnel injury last year from excessive "fortnight" play.
the article is silent as to current status of fried chicken and beer in the clubhouse.

I used the word "fortnight" in class last semester (in its original meaning - not the video game). Not a single student knew this was a real word or what it meant.

i'm no gamer -- havent played video games in years and have no desire to do so ever again -- but when i moved to atlanta in my mid 20's my neighbor 2 doors down was a friend from high school that was on the basketball team with me. we played a lot of atari basketball and some atari baseball. (he was in the yankees farm system for a few years and his skills somehow carried over to the baseball video game. i always got killed.) they've improved the game a bit over the years.

the mets beat the reds 1-0 yesterday; noah syndergaard got the 208th "true win" since 1908 (rarer than a no hitter).
if you don't know what a "true win" is (i didn't til this morning) it's a pitcher throwing a complete game (needed no help from another pitcher) and the pitcher also hit more home runs (syndergaard hit one yesterday) than runs he gave up (needed no help from another batter).
bob gibson has the record with 6 (4 of those against the cubbies) ; don drysdale 5 (including a 2 homer, 1 run given up game).
edit to add: if another one is ever pitched in the american league, it'll probably be by ohtani.2,000 milerThe post was edited 1 time, last by max.patch ().

the mercer bears (macon, ga) need to devote a little more practice time with the tarp.
according to the comments, the player running across the tarp in the first video was trapped between the tarp and the backstop but escaped safely when the winds died down.
