suggestions for powdered milk and dried eggs ?

I have noticed that as I get older I need to drink milk and eat eggs a few times per week.

Nido powdered milk gets good reviews. I was unable to located a low cost dried egg package. I don't want to spend 20 dollars or more and then find out I cannot stand the taste.

So what suggestions do you have for powderec milk and dried eggs to eat at meal time when hiking ?

look up Ovaeasy egg crystals. Excellent product and about as close as you can get to real eggs.

if you most interested in taste use nido. if you are most interested in heart health use carnation non fat. i love my heart.

i almost always eat oatmeal for breakfast and have never tried dried eggs and have no interest in doing so. i get my eggs in town.

if i ever wanted to see if dried eggs were any good i'd probably get a mountain house type egg meal for about $5. if that was satisfactory then i'd look into spending more money.

you can take a hard boiled egg for day 1.

I carry hard boiled eggs for days one thru three, never lasted longer than that without eating them all! I found I could boil 6 at once in my little pot with 1 oz of acohol. So I can buy a whole dozen at resupply, boil them up, and enjoy. The Ova Crystals have to be reconstituted and then cooked, what a mess. I dumped them in a hiker box. Mountain House is cooked before freeze drying, can even eat them crunchy. I found I could only get the scrambled eggs plain, (no bacon or ham) in a number ten can from a prepper place in Utah. That is a lot of eggs, I added crunched ones to mashed potatoes. Nido whole milk really does taste good, but cheese gives the same food value in a smaller package. I even found freeze dried cheese shreds. (Emergency Essentials)

Sorry, but in this day of boil in bag or freezer bag cooking I really cannot take seriously the Ovaeasy eggs being messy comment.

At the very least, egg crystals equal to the number of eggs you desire plus a teaspoon of Nedo with a dash of salt and pepper, sealed in a vacuum bag will give you nice scrambled eggs. Make the bag large enough, to cut open, add water and reconstitute. Bring water to a boil and set the vacuum bag into the water to cook. Bam!

Want to turn it up a little bit add freeze dried onions and peppers, cheese and sausage and you have a boil in bag omlete.

No fuss, no mess, no clean up.

I am a huge fan of no-cook on the trail. Boil those eggs and tape sea salt tabs from fast food places (I have to look) As for the Freeze dried egg bags. Once you open it. you have to use it... in less than six months the stuff goes bad.

woo, you always tell us to tape the individual salt containers to the eggs. sounds like an unecessary step to me.

Its my system it works.... I love eggs and sea salt... must be a owl thing...

Serious I am on a low sodium diet and attempting to loose weight and being a better person.

back in the early days many hikers actually carried salt tablets.

1 Mtn. House meal should give you enough sodium for 7 days or 100 miles.........which ever comes first.............................

I sweat profusely in the summer and when I was in Scouts took one salt tablet per day in August when temperatures were over 100F. Humidity was about 20 percent.

In hiking at 90F and high humidity, the idea is to sweat which is difficult due to the humidity. So I cut back on salt. Gatoraide wasn't around that I remember back then. Or I ignored it as a fad. I use Gatoraide now.

These days I just eat some salted peanuts and drink some water. Some of the places I've done computer tech support were unheated/uncooled buildings. Certainly helps to add a bit of salt around 10AM and again sometimes about 3 PM.

The words "powdered" and "eggs" used together just makes my skin crawl. It just sounds wrong.

Anyway, there have been some comments in this thread about problems with fat and salt. The bad reputation of these two nutrients (one macro, one micro) is not really supported by the research.

Been using Nido and OvaEasy for years.
Try the method Tuckahoe mentions.
You'd be surprised. It works.

Its not that I like powdered milk and eggs... it would be not having to worry about spoilage due to lack of a means to keep them cold. When I was in Scouts, if we took eggs and bacon, it was only for Saturday breakfast in the spring and fall. Put the eggs inside the messkit, wrap bacon around the eggs. Well, sometimes the eggs weren't cracked and sometimes they were.

I'll look into OvaEasy.

Nido is available locally.

As for my cholesterol levels, my doctors always tell me that lack of exercise is one big reason why its high.

Oh, and for the can of C-rations... I've eaten some of those. Just avoid the dinners.

Hard to beat spam & eggs. Best breakfast I ever had was canoeing the boundry waters in Canada and the guide fried up sausage, bacon, potatoes, onions and eggs all in a cast iron skillet and all mixed up together. Looked not so good, but tasted wonderful.

will almost always have bacon and eggs when car camping but never brought them backpacking. Calorie density is a bit low, but then again so is the can of beer I've been known to carry

I routinely carry hard boiled eggs with me. The mountain house omelettes are pretty good too. If you buy the precooked bacon you have it all and should be worshiped as a hiking god.
