at one time, the Smithsonian Museum had a display case of every day objects in their collection that they had know idea what they were. There was a place where visitors could submit info if they knew what any of the objects were. The identified lots of stuff that way.

The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Years ago my oldest son and I did a day trip to DC.
We left the house at 4AM and drove to a metro station in Maryland.
From there we took the train into DC and saw the Holocaust museum, Air+Space museum, walked the mall looking at the monuments, did a walk-by of the white house and the capital building. We were going to go to the Smithsonian, but it was closed.
Then we returned home, arriving at 4AM of the next day.
There still more I'd like to see there, but I don't much care for cities and crowds. -
My former Mom-in-law lived in Silver Springs. We did a road trip thru DC. SNP, HPrs Frry, Gettysburg. My boy was 10.
On July 4th we took the Metro down, spent all day. The thing that stood out to me and still does is the humanity there, visiting OUR National Capital. It was wonderful, makes me feel great to be an American. We watched the fireworks that nite on the Mall with ALL those people we saw during the day............I will never forget that day.Cheesecake> Ramen -

Anybody know how long the train ride is from Harper's Ferry into DC ?
Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

In 2014 when I hurt my knee and had to shorten my hike, I made lemonade out of lemons by doing some research for classes and presentations in HF and DC. Lots of neat history in HF too, along with the ATC.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

If wanting to primarily do DC for multiple days I would recommend also looking into VA and MD. Just find something reasonably near a metro station (hey we are hikers aren't we). Did DC with my sons this way, and it was great not having to worry about driving or parking. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

I may grow old but I'll never grow up.
