No one said at 15, and I was pissing and moaning about this fifty pounds on my back, and at 20, wearing green and carrying 50lbs. and an M16 with 200 rounds, that even at 25 and my pack was down to 40lbs I would still love being out there.
But at 58, even I am in amazement that I still love carrying my house on my back.....even though that apartment now only weighs 25 lbs.
Another 10 years of this and I may get down to Malto weight.

Malto is a cool guy. I really admire his pace, his walk history, that little bookbag he calls a backpack. But, I feel really bad for him when he has every stitch on, his sleeping bag inside his windbreaker jacket......and he is huddled around the campfire most of the nite...................and then, I roll out of my Puma at 0600....and he is gone!!!!SarcasmTheElf wrote:

nobody told me I'd ever want to kill a whippoorwill so bad. I swear one followed us from Rocksylvannia to Massachusetts. He'd start his song every night about midnight and not shut up until almost sun up.

I was never really interested in camping, staying in one place. I loved gear, but wasnt real keen on hiking a couple miles into a campsite at a lake or something and just hanging out.
It was when i discovered with light weights you could hike thousands of miles, a hundred or more between resupplies, that I was smitten. All of a sudden, anything was possible. I could go anywhere practically. Hiking itself became the destination.
Jeffrey pines smell like butterscotch when you first sniff them. Not uncommon to find people with their nose pressed against trees sniffing them out west...this can be alarming if you dont understand what they are doing...ok, that person might be me, im a tree sniffer.
