Hikerboy,
If you get this, the new reroute to Fontana was brushed out today and blow downs cleared. I would deem it as hikeable using the FS roads to the end of FS251C and then getting on the old Yellow Creek Mountain Trail. We are heading up there in the morning to finish brushing out a section that we couldn't finish (ran out of fuel) and start working back towards Old Field Gap Road. I would say it is conceivable that you could even leave FS251 at Halfmile Branch Gap (FS 251A) and get on the Yellow Creek Mountain Trail at that point and save a couple of miles by the time you get up to that point IF you made it as far as I expected you could. If I see you out there, I could slack you into Fontana. Leave your pack with me and hike into the Village where I can meet you with your pack and even shuttle you down to the shelter if you so desire. -

I've been following along in my guide book. For those interested, Crowder Ridge is around mile 174, Slick Rock Creek is 181, and Deals Gap is 189.8, where they're working on the bypass. If you've never driven on the Tail of the Dragon, it's quite an experience.

wow...i've heard of the road but never drove on it on -- and after watching the video i never will.
why isn't this road illegal for 18 wheelers with a large "turn around now" sign while it is still possible for them to do so?2,000 miler -

It's crazy. I've only driven on it a few times. There are pull-offs so you can let the motorcycles get by. Definitely don't go on it if you get car sick easily. :sick:Lost in the right direction. -

+1, it is like why I never ride a motorcycle anymore, while I would really enjoy it, it is not worth the risk of the other guy who does not see you or is out of control. Life is short enough as it is.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.
