I am one of those people that advised her to wear loose shoes. I would defer to people like you. You have far more experience. However, I know I am not alone in my opinion. I cannot hike with shoes that fit snug. It isn't about swelling for me. It is about keeping toenails.Non hikers are about a psi shy of a legal ball. -

My observation is that once you have done some long distance hikes your foot permanently gets a bit bigger.
I believe section hikers have the problem return repeatedly as increase is temporary.

When I did the AT I bought two pairs of hiking boots. The pair I had broken in best I saved for my backup. By the time I needed them in MA my feet had changed so much I got blisters under the callouses I had build up. They got bad enough that I had to cut through them to grain them. It really sucked when I camped by a lake in NH just south of Moosilaukoe & wanted to go for a swim. I tried repeatedly to put the foot in the water but the pain was too intense. A sponge bath with the cold water wsn't anyway near refreshing as a swim would have been!

At the time it would have been considered silly to wear trail shoes I presume.

HB, If you stay at Jenkins Shelter you may want to hang your food. They had lots of aggressive bear signs up last summer. And sure enough around 10pm we had a bear sniffing under the fly of people's tents. It is the only time in 4 weeks that I hung my food, and I am glad I did.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.
