A 22 mile loop on land managed by the Trustees Of Reservations. The Trustees are sort of like Nature Conservancy but local to MA. Anyway, nice walk, and not too far from home, maybe 1.5 hours driving, tops. Foliage seems to be near peak in central MA. There's one shelter on this trail, it's up near the top of the loop, near Royalston Falls. We had a nice campfire going last night and again this morning. This might just be my last backpacking trip for the season... maybe one more short one. Days are short, nights are long and cold.
This isn't too far from some of the hikes I did earlier this summer. From Tully Mountain you can see Mt. Monadock off to the northwest, and Mt. Wachusett and Mt. Watatic to the east. There's a trail from the north end of this loop to Mt. Monadnock. I think that stretch is part of the Metacomet-Monadnock trail, which has since been rolled into the New England Trail (NET). Mt. Watatic is the southern end of the Wapac Trail. Monadnock is the southern end of the Monadnock-Sunapee trail. Wachusett is part of the MA Mid-State trail, and where I'll be skiing this winter (have season pass, read to roll.)
PS., the old man is a guy I met on Tully Mtn. He's 95 years old and still an avid hiker. He's a 2000 miler.
