Was just thinking of my winter Expedition of PCT many years ago. 100+ miles with no resupply, avalanche & glacier travel involved so we each needed redundant gear. Lod worked out to almost 140lbs each. With 4' of fresh powder on day 2 we decided to bail. We made a snow shelter. As we were lying in it that night playing cribbage keeping score on a piece of paper he said we have to rethink logistics next trip. 300lbs of gear & we are spending the long nights trying to play card in gloves with a mini deck! I doubt the extra ounce would have changed our hike!

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

No photo, but when I was in high school my dad was stationed at an Army base. We had a military unit as a sponser. They would provide transportation to camping areas. Two guys in that unit had been Scouts and wanted to work with the troop.
They and several of us got their early before the meeting.
Some of the kids took a dislike to them, and proceeded to dismantle their jeep, without hand tools.
Handed them the antenna off the rear fender. One of the rear view mirrors on the side of the jeeep. The bolted down Jerry can o the back of the jeep, etc.
By the time the Scoutmaster got their, about 20 minutes later, the two guys decided they didn't want to volunteer.--
"What do you mean its sunrise already ?!", me. -

June 1967. My father and I are ready for my first AT hike in MD. I recall seeing Washington Monument St Park and hiking to a shelter. I carried a tan canvas frame less knapsack. I would have just turned 8.

When I was young, I was required to carry my lunch, water, a jacket, and a whistle. I'll have to look for pictures the next time I visit my parents.Lost in the right direction.

Exactly 25 years ago (minus one day). It was 9/11/1990. Climbed Katahdin via the AT and spent the night at Daicey Pond Shelter. Some years later, BSP decided that this was too nice a spot for thru-hiker trash. I also met Ward Leonard again, on the trail in the park, and at the shelter.
