its great things turned out ok, but wth were they thinking to wait 2 days, the guy could have had internal injuries and died in hours.

Who knows what people think in those situations.

I can't understand why he would wait 2days unless his dad told him maybe thinking he could still walk the 3 miles himself

...and it was only 3 miles. And then he sent him off with a 40lb pack. Maybe he wasn't thinking rationally because of his injuries.

seems like it was another 8 mi to the campground, but all the more reason he should have gone for help sooner.

You really can't judge what should have been done without being there and in that situation, I'm guessing the father's primary concern, even though injured, was his son, and then how many of us would make the right choice, if there is a right choice...if the guy is still alive....that was the right choice.

i'm thinking he waited thinking he might be able to walk out on his own with a day or two of rest(for the reasons that db just mentioned), but finally decided he couldnt, and sent the boy.

I expect he thought someone else might stumble on to them, and really didnt want to send the kid on his own. But, very lucky things turned out good.
When my son started hiking with me at 11, i had a talk with him about what he would need to do if something happened to me, like a heart attack, etc. Just to put it in his head so there would be no hesitation if the time came. Scouting helped too.

When my daughter started hiking with me, I made a game of it: "Keep track of the landmarks, because you're leading the return trip!" (And then let her lead - and make a few mistakes so that she knew that I was actually letting her lead.) I think she was in her early teens when I finally had the talk that explained that if (God forbid) anything happened to me, she had to find her own way out and get help for me. But by then she was getting to be confident that she could.
