Of the AT only?
Its pretty much only a modern thing where walking long distance is recreation.
That used to be a way of life for people. -

I don't remember very many people walking long distances in the 1950s in Texas. Cars all over the place. So many drove, we were warned that by the time we reached our teen years, our feet would have fallen off.
Mine are still there, my feet that is.--

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -

Earl was first but of course, at the time there were no purists following him on Facebook to say he missed 76 yards at Grafton Notch.
I have no doubt he yellow blazed a few portions just like about 90% of those that have followed him. In his case it was more understandable as a lot of it was land with residents not always friendly to hikers. The first 2000 miler was definitely Avery.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -
