There was a school of thought that it was a large "captured" asteroidal object.

Well, there are Lagrange points in Earth orbit. There are rocks there, so Earth hasn't cleared its orbit either.
The other complaint the galaxy astronomers had was Pluto's orbit crosses Neptune's orbit. I don't see how that makes it a non-planet.--

Not surprisingly, scientists formerly classified it as a gas giant.
In 2011, scientists using the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope discovered the first Trojan, 2011 QF99. This gave scientists reason to look for other asteroids associated with the seventh planet. They found Crantor and 2010 EU65, two more asteroids, which are likely to hang around for millions of years. -
