The Doyle is what it is, just don't expect much more than food, beer, and friends and you won't be disappointed.
Kathy and I stopped there for lunch one day and stayed much longer than we planned just because. It was a good time.
We shared the salad and cheese fries and each had our own beers and burger.
As I remember we got there late morning and left middle of the afternoon going on to the next shelter southbound.
As we climbed the hill going out of town my sweat smelled like Yuengling -

I stayed 2 nights in the Doyle. It is.... an experience.
The one thing that I found every sensible person did before bedding down was work out what their middle of the night exit route was in the event of fire.
While it's still standing you shouldn't miss the experience.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

missing out on the total doyle experience would be like hiking the a.t. but skipping katahdin. stop, eat, drink, shower, and spend the nite.

I had the room on the corner in the round bit 2nd floor down. My escape route was out the window and slide off the roof onto a car not yet in that picture.

Interesting photo. Around 1990 I saw photos of people attending the early, 1950s and 1960s world science fiction convention... they wore semi-formal wear for every day. Suit and ties, with some not wearing dress coats, for the guys. And dresses for the women. No jeans, no t-shirts, no walk around the convention costumes... glad I didn't attend. If someone dressed like that now at a sf convention, I would think they had made a wrong turn into the wrong building. Maybe looking for a business luncheon instead.--
