there is a company that sells "man patches" to document various outdoor accomplishments. we make fun of them. here is an example:

there are also people on this website and others that make fun of people who hike the entire trail "for a patch". they don't understand that they hike the entire trail for what the patch represents, not the actual piece of cotton.

Patches, stickers, race bibs, medals, t shirts... I love them all. They are reminders that no matter how much I suck and how many times I come in last place, at least I try and am able to accomplish something.Lost in the right direction.

i must admit to feeling a bit of pride when i was listed in the bmta site as a thru hiker. bmta.org/300-Milers.htm
i didnt get the patch thoughits all good -
Ooooh. I thought this was a term for a backpacking "thing" I haven't learned about yet. I'm learning a lot of "things" from this forum. I don't have any cool patches. -_-
I guess there is one for completing the Buckeye Trail but I wasn't aware of it until a year later. I missed out on being able to display a tiny reminder of how I have a lot of free time but not enough money to leave the state haha! -

Yes, In sections and not always in order. I've hiked most all of the loop but I did't notice the cut off section that dipped into Washington county. I'll miss the blue blazes but now we have the white ones and my daughter is old enough to join some of the fun. We think they look like bird doo on the trees so my daughter calls them "bird Blazes". -

My late wife collected such mementoes of her accomplishments. I would tease her occasionally if she spent a few minutes in a frantic search for the symbol of success at an event.
However the collection is very precious now as memories are refreshed each time I view it.

I have one for the Bibbulmun. They automatically give it when you register.
It's somewhere in the box marked "Jack's junk drawer" in a shipping container 300 miles away at the moment.
I have found that if I see a patch of that kind on a backpack or jacket etc, I move away as the owner will generally be a PIA.

No self respecting gram weenie would add a patch to their gear.Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

What is gram weenie?
A person who is so obsessed with pack weight (or skin-out weight) that they do everything possible to eliminate even an excess gram. Cutting off half a toothbrush handle and drilling holes in what's left, cutting off extra length on pack straps, tags out of clothing. All sorts of nutty behavior.Do your duty in all things.
