Quote from meat: “ It's like "Ruth's Chris" what the! Say that one ten times fast ” No thanks. I got quite enough of that in the first grade. The teacher's name was Mrs. Schiebler, and I had to say that several times a day. You try and say, 'Mrs. Schiebler' with no front teephth!

  • This site has a surprising number of PhD's hanging out on it. The nickname, 'Professor', attached itself to me in high school. When I attended a high school reunion after I married, with my wife Mary Ann in tow, one of my old classmates immediately said, 'The Professor and Mary Ann got together? Say it isn't so!'

Can't comment on the silicone mat, but 'Sur Le Table' makes my eyes hurt. ('Table' is feminine - it's 'Sur la table.') Le français: tu le fais tout mal. (French: you're doing it all wrong). Suits this site to a T!

  • Quote from Datto: “What I don't like are control-freak people like televangelists. The lavish lifestyles, the cost structure and zero tolerance preaching across the airwaves leading to only one way of thinking -- that's the part I dislike. Jerry Falwell is the singular image for all of that -- even before he became directly involved in politics. ” A lot of religious control freaks - the followers, rather than the leaders, many of whom are simply psychopathic - come from the position of, "if enou…

  • Quote from TrafficJam: “No one has commented on OMO's self-evaluation but I will have to agree. Another Kevin belongs in that group, IMO. He is way too humble. ” I explained in the thread: deficient at best because I'm doing it all wrong! If I'm not doing it all wrong, what am I doing on this site?

  • One of the great aspects of modern technology is that for a hundred-acre preserve, you can do a rough draft of a trail map in a day, just by logging GPS tracks in both directions on all the trails a time or three, and interpolating the errors. Yeah, I know that cliff would seriously confuse GPS, and I see you're doing it right with planetable methods, but that takes four guys (alidade, rod, and two for the chain or tape) and a lot more time. It was nice that I could get the trail data into opens…

  • Quote from Mountain-Mike: “I yried voting for #11, but apparently something is wrong with my voice recognition software. ” Deficient at best, since I'm doing it all wrong!

  • You may think it's funny, but it's snot.

  • Quote from jimmyjam: “I read that as guitar snot guns ” Snotguns sound like something Rocketsocks would be interested in.

  • Yes, and some rivers in the deserts dry up before they reach anywhere. I said MOST places.

  • Quote from IMScotty: “It seems strange that she would hole up for a month when by most accounts it was a few days walk out. Perhaps her partner was the real hiker of the team and when he was gone perhaps the best thing for her to do was sit tight? ” Most of us are raised on, "if anything goes wrong, sit tight and wait for rescue." Many of us never get to the point of recognizing that it's a fine idea for eleven-year-old boy scouts, who are traveling in a big group, probably within a few hundred …

Quote from Wise Old Owl: “Quote from WanderingStovie: “Who is the slow blinker? ” Uh Whoo? Northern Saw Whet. ” When I was hiking by the light of the supermoon (not planned, just misplanned the time - misread metres for feet in the elevation stats!) the barred owls were very, very active. Quote from CoachLou: “Yesterday morning, @ the AMC NW Camp, west end of Sages Ravine ... nice pics ... ” Almost time to break out the snowshoes for the Race Cliffs! (That's a terrific trip on snowshoes...)

  • Quote from JimBlue: “Odd as my flashes stopped when the retina detached and never appeared again after the retina was put back. ” Mine tore, but never fully detached. The doc lasered around the break, which will keep it from detaching, but there's still tension on it until the vitreous completely peels off.

  • Quote from JimBlue: “The flash of light is a warning sign of more problems. Get to an opthamologist. You can lose your eyesight. That is a warning sign my ophthalmologist gave me to watch out for. ” I did get to an ophthalmologist when the flashes started. They were indeed a warning sign of a detached retina. I had it repaired. The surgeon who did the repair says that the flashes are likely to take a few years to subside entirely, and tells me to watch for increased flashes, flashes in a differe…
