Took a walk today
PostI finally took a walk today for the first time in what feels like forever. It almost never works out that my husband and I both have a weekend free at the same time and that the weather is pleasant to boot. Aside from the fact that I've had some kind of upper respiratory crap going on for the last week and I probably coughed enough to scare off any wildlife within earshot, it was a great day. We hit up a few local trails. One was a super short, approximately 1.25 mile end to end with key hole lo…

Quote from rhjanes: “Quote from LIhikers: “I got to see the partial eclipse through a welding helmet. Am I the only one who thought "so what?" ” I used a full welding helmet also. I think it depended on how much percentage was covered. We were around 80 percent. The 10 minutes either side of the full effect, the birds got quiet, light was sort of like 10 minutes before dusk. It was "neat" but not near worth the HOURS LONG!! OH MY!!! news coverage..... I was in a full eclipse up in Alaska and tha…

Quote from Dan76: “Idaho residents capitalized in a similar fashion. ” There's still a steady flow of southbound traffic on I-15 this morning but at least it's moving. It was taking people upwards of three hours to make it from Idaho Falls down to Pocatello, yesterday evening. That's a 45 minute drive at best on a normal day. I wonder how many of the people who were consistently saying for days, leading up to the event that none of the predicted crowds had showed up, were enjoying the taste of t…

If I remember, I will walk outside and NOT stare at the sun. I really wanted to get a filter for my camera so I could take pictures but buying one was way out of my budget and all the rentals were scooped up months ago, so alas, I will just enjoy not working that day and might remember to walk outside.

PostQuote from Dan76: “Quote from Ewok11: “Anyone familiar with Boise? I have to be there for a few days next week for work and would take any recommendations for a good place to get a beer and a bite to eat. ” Been through a few times but not overnight. First time I found a pizza/microbrewery on the outskirts of town that was worthy of a return visit. However the facility was vacated several months later upon return. Therefore no recommendations at this time. However if traveling along the Wasatch …

I think this week is the first time (not today just this week) that the temps have been below 95 degrees in the last two months. We've also gotten the first measurable rain in that same amount of time. Earlier this week we got a whole 2/10 of an inch. It's lightly raining tonight, so maybe it will add to the total. Thankfully, the slightly cooler temps, slightly higher humidity and small amount of rain have helped with containment efforts of the 53,000+ acre wildfire right outside of town. It wa…

Quote from Rasty: “Quote from twistwrist: “Hey y'all! My plans are coming together for a hike in July of 2018! As much as I'm hoping hoping hoping to land a JMT permit, I'm trying also to consider the fact that I may not get lucky. Regardless, I want to hike a beautiful trail out west somewhere...one approximately 200 miles long, give or take 50 miles. What other trails would you recommend of the JMT doesn't work out for me? ” Part of the Idaho centennial trail ” This trail is on my list now tha…

Unusual Adventures
PostI don't really think I've done much that rates. The only foreign country I've been to so far is Canada but driving through the Western half of it in the Winter can certainly seem like an adventure. I've camped beside and spent a weekend climbing on a glacier in Alaska. The scariest thing I've done was volunteer (I was 16) to be a group lead/assistant to take a bunch of 10-12 year old kids up Blood Mountain to stay in the shelter for a night. That was probably when I originally decided that I was…

Took a walk today
PostQuote from NoAngel: “Quote from Ewok11: “Well, my walk today certainly isn't as pretty as Norway but it's the first actual hike/walk not on pavement I've managed to squeeze in since I moved to Idaho. Red Hill as seen from below and Red Hill as seen from the top. It's not a super long trail since it's only a 200 ft elevation gain but it was a good practice run outside of walking around my neighborhood. Yay erythrocyte production!! ” What's the significance of the columns? ” I wondered the same th…

Plantar Fasciitis

PostDo you have a tennis ball, lacrosse ball, foam roller, anything like that? My completely used-to-be-a-professional-but-no-longer-do-that-kind-of-therapy opinion is to try rolling your foot and calf on it for 20 seconds at a time off and on throughout the day. Keep at it with the ice and try adding some passive movements, like tracing out the alphabet (upper and lower case) with your foot. Nothing is going to miraculously cure it but if you can strengthen your stabilizers and relieve some tension…

I saw these giant white birds on the river a few weeks ago and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what they were. We also saw them on the drive down from Alaska, somewhere in Montana but passed by them so quickly that I thought I must have been mistaken in what I saw. In all my travels back and forth across this country and continent, I'm happy to still see something new. The American White Pelican. **I spaced it and completely forgot to take my camera, so I only have cell phone pics." app…

Winter Weather Advisory for Tuesday night through Thursday morning for Eastern Idaho. The mountains are expected to receive upwards of 10 inches of snow. The lower elevations are expected to pick up 2-3 inches of snow but if the cold pushes in just a little faster than the precip and we get 5-6 inches instead, it will break the all time snow record for the city.

Currently 70 degrees with a real feel of 78. High today is forecast to be 80. The high for Saturday is forecast to be 55 with rain down here and snow at elevation. We've had a lot of flooding in Central and Southern Idaho the last week or so due to higher than average rain during April and the warmer temps causing snow melt, after a higher than average snowfall during the Winter. Fortunately, the flooding hasn't been anywhere near as bad in regard to impacting the daily lives of people or doing …
