  • Not only does Wired have a streamlined gear set, her daily posts from the trail are pretty cool. I hate when following a blog, the hiker 'disappears' dosent post for 2-3-4 weeks. It's like, hey, what happened last WEEK?

Quote from jimmyjam: “I would go to an outfitter and have them measure you. Then you'll know what your torso length and hip belt size would be , even if you don't buy from them.” As JJ says, you really need to be measured for your pack if it does not have adjustable torso length. Which most don't these days. ULA website gives example for how to measure. Also besides ULA, a couple more options are Mountain Laurel Designs and Gossamer Gear for packs. (and lots of other kick azz gear)

Quote from LIhikers: “I used to wear Vasque Clarion boots at home, to work, and to hike in. Then A few years back I switched to shoes. or trail runners, or whatever they are called. I've found that the Oboz brand fits my feet really well. Now I reserve the boots for hiking in snow or when I suspect there might be a lot of mud.” Yep, had a few pair of the Vasque over the years and man were they comfortable. I too am onboard with the OBOZ these days (actually past couple of years) they fit me very…

Quote from Astro: “Processed foods is another factor working against us. They estimate General Douglas MacArthur used to walk about 5 miles a day, mostly from just pacing back and forth in his office. I teach for 4 hours a day on MWF and I am standing up the entire time, sometimes pacing back and forth. I guess I need to switch to a tablet so I can stand and walk around the rest of the time when I am reading and grading.” Processed foods ARE a biggie. Have you seen some of these labels... contai…

Quote from PaulMags: “Many people will sleep with their canister even when used as a remote/inverted canister for winter use. Once it gets going, it seems to do well however.” The convenience of the canister is without a doubt handy, as long as demand meets supply. While in the woods, I must admit, I still gravitate towards alcohol stove/wood. I think alot of conversation has evolved over just plain 'buildin' a wood fire'. Keep the other fuel in reserve.
