Quote from OzJacko: “ Just be aware that the older the man the longer it takes.... ” I've often thought about that in terms of mortality.... being unable to scoot quickly to escape a large predator, for example. Pinch it off, shake it off, zip up and get moving, quick!

One thing I know. If you haven't seen anyone for hours or days and pull over to answer the call... that's when you'll have company. Amazing how that works.

Yesterday Merry and I were skiing at Wachusett Mtn. about 45 minutes west of Boston. This morning I took a 19.5 mile bike ride -- my usual summertime loop. It's 53F outside as I write this.

  • One of the problems with a SOBO hike is that you're almost certain to be finishing up in late November, December, or even January. Days will be short and of course there's the real possibility of cold rain, ice, slush, and snow. NOBO on the other hand, spreads the risk a bit. At least if you wait till, say, mid-March. You may get a bit of that wintry stuff at the very start and the very end of your hike, but probably it'll be more the exception than the rule.

Hobbies come and go. I don't think I'll give up skiing unless I just can't do it any more. The photo is from today, at Wachusett Mountain in MA. Which is on the MA Mid-State trail, which I have hiked. In fact I hiked it several times before I ever skied it. But other than that... photography, hiking, sailing, bicycling, RC airplanes, reading. My latest is music -- though I'll never be much good at it, it's still fun to try. Also interested in music theory, ie., how does music work?

Eh, we spend our lives working hoping for some relief and some fun when that phase is over -- but will we have the health to enjoy our freedom? Youth is wasted on the young.

Have been fighting off a cold since returning from MLK IV. Today I felt well enough to ski again... second time this season. Considering we got nothing at all from Jonas (snow-wise) I'd say conditions were excellent.

Quote from Drybones: “I'm not capable of comprehending this, but, an area outside Buffalo got 7' (that's feet) in one day some years back, it was on the news but I'm not sure I believe them. ” Yes, this can happen along the eastern shore of Lake Erie (in New York, south of Buffalo) and the eastern shore of Lake Ontario -- eg., places like Watertown, New York. But this last storm was of a different sort. The epicenter seems to be northern Virginia and thereabouts.

Quote from Astro: “Quote from rafe: “Quote from socks: “So I guess I'm wondering now is if that stat is just happenstance, or is there some science behind it? ” The colder air is, the less moisture it can hold. That's why humidity is always relative. ” Sounds like something Einstein would say. ” It's all about dew point. Precipitation happens when the air cools to where it can't hold water as vapor any more. That is the very definition of precipitation.

So I must be doing something wrong... ” No, your (slight) misfortune doesn't improve my outlook. I'm still getting over the cold I caught on my return home. Damn, I knew that was gonna happen. I've barely been out of doors since then...

When Rafe saw it he asked me to take a photo because it looked funny as heck. ” Well, actually... HB took one look and grinned and said, "you're doin it wrong" and somehow that remark struck me as funny at the time. So I suggested a photo to commemorate.

You really need to be prepared for almost anything in the White Mountains, any time of year. Either that, or be prepared to hunker down, well down from the ridge. it could be 80F or 40F, neither of these are far-fetched. The cold may be accompanied by rain, fog, mist or wind just to keep matters interesting. Be sure to have some sort of hat and thin gloves as well. Here's a link to a day hike this summer (July 31) on Franconia Ridge -- it was 80 or so back in Boston, but about 50 and breezy on t…

Several different styles for differing conditions and seasons. Thickest are fleece, for lots of warmth. Thinnest are silk, just for sleeping or at camp in summer. I'd druther not wear long pants to hike, so in summer I'm likely to be in base layer plus shorts. Can't say I'm on top of all the different technologies and fabrics. There's Capilene, polypro, silk, wool, fleece...
