  • Quote from odd man out: “On TOS he asked if anyone has a Kackwa55 pack because he'd had some questions. I decided to reply that I did. No follow up as of yet. ” Yes - the thread where he explained his foolproof gear buying process. "I create a list of my 'must-haves' for a piece of gear. Then I spend weeks researching available options. Then I move some of my 'must-haves' into the 'wants' column. Then I settle for a piece of gear that has 70% of my 'must-haves' and ignore the 30% of the 'must-ha…

  • I know PETA doesn't condone beating a dead horse, but... appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…328048015d372564bbc672f67 I guess that when you join a forum and insult or aggravate folks that try to offer information, you're not going to make many friends. Mrs. Tortoise and I had brisket sandwiches on our drive to Asheville on Tuesday, brisket & egg burritos on the drive home Saturday, and then stopped one more time to refuel and grab a pair of brisket sandwiches for Sunday's dinner. I'm Buc-ee'd out. I…

Took a quick twilight hike on the Bearwallow Mountain Trail in Gerton NC today. Mrs. Tortoise caught up to me after the majority of the climb was done and was ready to turn back.. We didn't get the mountain top view but did see a nice sunset back at the parking area. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…328048015d372564bbc672f67

  • Quote from max.patch: “I'm thinking I need to be on Springer mid March 2025 and catch the show. ” I'm thinking the real sh!t show will be at Neels Gap. Will Reverend MattC stop into the hostel to preach to the unclean masses? "Thine lack of hardship in Georgia will surely smite thee in thine Maine wilderness. REPENT!" Or at the NOC. I'd be inclined to park my butt on a bench outside of the convenience store to watch the mighty hiker stroll right through without stopping for a Snicker's or a Gato…

  • Mrs. Tortoise and I are heading to Asheville for Thanksgiving. Looking forward to stopping at Buc-ee's for a brisket sandwich on our way south.

  • Quote from hddeuce03: “Quote from max.patch: “Quote from odd man out: “On TOS he reports being a bit put off by not being able to edit posts. I wonder why? ” ” Hey all, new here. What is TOS? Thanks! ” The Other Site, also known as whiteblaze.net. Most folks here were moderated off that site and came here for more fun. And thread drift, Can't forget about thread drift. Look... a butterfly!

  • I just watched the delusional 35-minute Delusional on the AT video. And I think I found the basis for the MattC mentality. In between all of the hostel, shower, bed, kitchen meal, etc. tirades, he started talking about gear. He was primarily ranting about 'idiots' that buy expensive high performance / low weight tents. Then he threw out a comment about $700 sleeping bags that you don't need to be able to hike the AT in 'discomfort', also known as the MattC way. So even if you bypass shelters, le…

  • Trying to figure out MattC is a nice diversion from working this morning. Most of my emails or Teams messages are related to cancelled meetings or people taking off this week. Might as well have some fun to kill the time... I'm not sure that he has a full understanding of what an AT shelter actually is. Maybe he's forming his opinions based on the Huts in the Whites. A person using GoFundMe for their AT hike would definitely get riled up over a section where free camping is restricted and Hut st…

  • Quote from rhjanes: “Looks like the OP has found and posted on TOS. He also has a YouTube channel which he posted a link on TOS to point at. youtube.com/@360Investigations ” He's a magician. And obviously a good one. He was able to turn into a douchebag with one click of the mouse.

  • Had lunch there with my daughter. And she brought several friends back to show them the beauty of this section. Then my son and a friend hiked the section and stopped in for a break. The USFS is also looking to decommission the privy. Now that is going too far! If I recall correctly, it is one of the few privies in that section. And I appreciated it.

It's been a while since I came across an interesting new offering. I had read that Jefferson's was coming out with Tropics, but I missed the initial offering at my favorite Kentucky retailer. Then I found bottles at a Total Wine store in Indianapolis. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…328048015d372564bbc672f67 Here's the background. Jefferson's Ocean is blended from barrels that are aged at sea in a specially-designed shipping container. The constant sloshing of the bourbon in the barrels increases…

  • Halloween was a real treat. Started out in the low 40's with swirling winds, then got progressively colder once the sun went down. Five minutes into the sugar-crazed zombie apocalypse (trick or treating), it started snowing. By 19:30, no kids felt is was worth the effort to gain more candy.

I'll throw a plug in for the Compton Gap to Duncannon section in May. A nice time to hike in southern PA and well ahead of the bubble. No worries about dry water sources either.

When I was young, I prayed for a new bicycle. Then I went to Sunday School and learned that's not how prayer works. So I stole a bicycle and prayed for forgiveness.

  • I'm thinking it was a weekend meth binge and Matt_C has been in withdrawal since Sunday. Wonder if Matt-C is planning on using modern gear for his 2025 thru attempt. Lightweight internal-frame packs, trail runner and waterproof gear ruin the AT for me. Anyone that doesn't wear 4 pound Limmers is just cheesing their way through. In my humble opinion. Which cannot be refuted.

  • Radical Logical Fallacy - RLF. I'm adding that acronym to my 'pack'. Doesn't weigh anything but could come in handy. WTF...RLF!

  • Has Matt_C offered his authoritative 'facts' on TOS? Might have to head over there to see. Also need to look for the referenced videos to see the "ton of other real hikers blood boil." Think about the effort he is putting into this crusade. Or windmill tilting. - Registers and posts in the Introduce Yourself thread as a prospective 2025 AT thru-hiker. - Posts his Manifesto and edits it eight times. Eight times! Theodore Kaczynski only edited his manifesto three times. Just sayin'... - In the fir…

  • Screw it. Now that I am aware that the AT has been ruined, I'm gonna quit my 20-year cheating snowflake section hike. I also have no patience for stupidity. But it can be entertaining.
