I'm Mountain MIke & I'm a sock addict. I often set out with 4 pairs of socks. With new synthetics I rarely use a liner. My thinking is my feet are doing most of the work & for best results you have to keep the workers happy. I carry enough so I have clean to hike in & sleep in. I got hooked n Thorlo's year ago. Mostly because they sponsered me on my PCT hike giving me 2 dozen pairs for my hike. I was able to rotate them out as the new "spingy feel" got worn out. I actually had a waiting list of …

It's one thing to keep in mind on those depressingly wet hikes. ” Just remember, the sun comes out eventually...I told myself that for eleven days last time out. ” My 88 thru was a hike of extremes. It seamed like everything we wished for came true." I wish the trail wsn't so steep!" then came the miles of switchbacks in NC. Everybody wishes for rain to stop. IT did! Then the drought came. It seemed like…

There is only one correct way to hike..."MY Way"! You have to find out what that is for you. As Max Patch said the list is ever evolving. I bet neither of us would start with the same gear we did on our thrus back in 88( most of it belongs in museums!). Your gear list looks resonable according to your adjustments. I used to say a thru hie was just a bunch of week long backpacking trips back to back. Now on the AT it's can be more like weekend trips with resupply every few days. Don't fret it. Yo…

Quote from twistwrist: “So it's either walk in the rain or go thirsty. It's one thing to keep in mind on those depressingly wet hikes. ” it's not that bad. I recall one lunch/water stop at a farm market no more than 1/2 mile from the trail, maybe shorter. Not many trails where you can munch on farm fresh cucumbers & tomatoes for lunch!

We went thru several 10-12 + mile dry areas. Springs are often .3 mile or more off trail and down very steep path. ” Very good to know. Thank you! I read that in the AT Guide regarding PA water sources commonly running dry in hotter months. Quote from Drybones: “Quote from jimmyjam: “Twistwrist : when you com…

When I lived on Nantucket working for property management company my bike became preferred transport over a vehicle. I could respond to calls a lot quicker like fire alarms at our hotels. Even routine service calls, my completion rate was a lot higher. There were enough supervisors tat would pick up any parts I needed that I would call into the supply house. In the very crowded downtown they would radio me when close , I would walk out into the street to meet them. It saved hours a day trying to…

  • I don't always hang m food, but when I do I do it right. What I do in VA is very different from say the Sierra. Same as pooping in the woods. Desert vs boreal forest... Given the chance talk with local rangers, backcountry staff if possible. They know the real deal.

I'm currently working in Myrtle Beach for Bike Week. A small lizard ended up on a display boot & the sales girl brought it(boot & all) up to me & said"I brought you a friend" I went to nudge it on me...it didn't like that idea & went running up her arm. Come to find out she is pretty squemish for a fam girl. My hearing should recover in a day or two. Where the little guy got launced to I hav no clue.

  • I always used my stove stuff sack. Throw rock(s), gravel or anything else for weight. Never hung it up yet. I'll say good location choice & great aim. More likely good luck.
