Quote from IMScotty: “I will contact Rafe to see if he wants to join us this year. Has anyone heard from Another Kevin? ” Hi, I'm here - I don't hang out on the hiking sites much because life has got seriously in the way of hiking the last 2-3 years, and when I hang out on hiking sites, I get the grumbles. I already sent Coach Lou regrets for this year, but it looks as if the alignment of the stars is shifting. My feet are both OK at the moment, my eye surgeon has blessed the travel, and there's…

  • Quote from jimmyjam: “Quote from Astro: “Or back when you were a toddler and your dad would let you sit in his lap while he was driving. ” you got that right, I was driving good by the time I was 12. First day at behind the wheel I drove the car thru the cones and didn't knock any over. The teacher said : you think you're good, back thru them. I did with out knocking any over. He asked me: Just how long have you been driving? I told him oh about 4 years. ” same thing happened with my daughter. S…

  • Quote from Astro: “Quote from AnotherKevin: “The areas at greatest risk are the north and south edges of what's marked as the 'danger zone' on the map. Guess who lives at latitude 42.8° North? ” Rocket Man? ” If that was an attempt to assign me a trail name, I'm not biting.

  • My parents discovered that the back deck of the '61 VW Microbus was just the right size to hold a crib mattress, and my baby brother slept there on long trips. My foster sister and I would reverse the middle seat so we could face each other, place a piece of fiberboard across our laps, and play board games.

(Looks as if I replied to the wrong thread on the first try!) Dzien dobry, Luk67! You don't actually need to be a speed demon to hike the AT in six months, if you don't spend all your time goofing off with the thru-hiker party crowd. Six months is roughly 180 days. Assume you take a weekly zero, that's 154 days hiking. Even if you spend a couple of weeks doing 8-10 mile days until you find your trail legs, and slow down through the Whites, that still means needing to average only 15 mpd on the r…

  • I just had one of the rubber bands on my Microspikes tear - oddly enough, it wasn't one of the chain links tearing out, it was one of the bands at the heel. I had a look at a new pair in the store, and wow, has the build quality gone WAY downhill. The silicone looks flimsy, the chains are lighter gauge, and there's no wire bail at the toe any more. Anyone know whom Kahtoola sold out to? Sad to see a brand that I liked apparently going down the tubes. I'd had two pair of Kahtoola in the last eigh…

Quote from CoachLou: “I got my annual local pack shop gift card from my son. I traded it for a North face fleece lined vest. Which I’m sure will be in the MLK VI photos. I like vests in winter, my olive oil based skin is too warm for walking in a jacket. I have 2 just fleece ones, but one is old and the other has a Ginmill emblem on the breast pocket. It is very comfortable, I just don’t what people thinking I sponsor a ginmill. ” We'll leave that to certain other hikers from the MLK group.

No telling when the current extreme cold might break - but they're predicting that it won't for another week or so at least. If it stays this cold, daughter and I are going to have to bail on Harriman, I think! (She hasn't camped in Real Winter before. We've had 'shoulder season' trips in snow, but she's only geared up for weather down to about 0 °F)

Quote from odd man out: “I got a new computer. Our old one was 10 years old. That's 100 in computer years. ” At least that treadmill has been slowing down lately. My desktop computer isn't something that I'm itching to replace, even though I built it three years ago. At least I built it to decent specs back then, but I don't see current models improving on it all that much. Quad-core Haswell (Core i7-4770K), 32 GB RAM, 0.5 TB SSD, 4 TB RAID10 (Western Digital Red drives, 4 x 2 TB). Enough oomph …

  • Quote from montana mac: “When I was a kid (many years ago) I remember camping at the Spruceton Lean-to - Haven't been their since then - does the shelter still exist? ” Hmm. there are three lean-to's that are in easy hiking range of the Spruceton trailhead, and I don't know which one you might mean. (I'm guessing that you don't either.) The closest is Diamond Notch, which is about 1.2 miles from the trailhead and 0.3 miles from the waterfall in Diamond Notch - I'm guessing that's the shelter you…

Quote from CoachLou: “I believe it is time to start talking about MLK VI! HB and I recently did a loop in the southern part of Harriman Park, and that wild hair is tickling me to go in that direction, but still be able to get to The Inn Sunday for brunch. I am specifically looking at NY/NJ map 118. Parking a few cars near Sloatsburg on 7 Lakes road and some at Lake Skanatati. Either direction works, with many options for Saturday loops, with 3 shelters in that area. If you have ideas........ go …

  • Quote from montana mac: “My father's ashes are scattered on Slide Mountain in NY. It was a place he use to talk about and meant something to him. ” I'll have to remember to pay my respects when I'm next up there. I have family members whose remains are in the Catskills (or in one case, thought to be: my step-grandfather went hiking in Spruceton in 1940 and was never seen again).

Quote from odd man out: “ In Sweden there are unstaffed ferry crossings on the Kungsleden (one of their long distance trails) that simply have three rowboats - one on one side and two on the other. If you are lucky, you get to the side with two boats and you simply row across. But if you get to the side with one boat you have to row across, bring one boat back from the other side and leave where you started and row the second over to the other side and keep going. It works until you get some but…
