Thanks for your input everybody. With everything said I'm going with the bv500. Someone mentioned it'd be nice to have before hand to get the packing down. Which would work out better since we're flying and putting it in a suitcase and can prepack it. I'll have to keep my eyes open on the sales coming up, like max mentioned.

Hopefully hand washing slows down the Noro next year. It was nice not having it around in my neck of the woods. I was able to hike the AT around here this year....

Will a 550 hold enough food for two people for 3 nights? I'm guessing it's ok to carry your first nights food out of the canister.

Last clue to give it away. I figured most on this site have hiked Roan Mtn and that it’s been a few years. I guess because I’ve seen it so many times the image is burned into my mind. I figured it was burned into everyone else’s.

I've read that different areas in the Sierra's approve different canisters. If you lived there you'd have to own multiple styles it seems. I'm also wondering what I do with my bear can when I'm away from camp. Do I take it with me? I've read that you shouldn't stack rocks on and around the canister. This sounds odd to say, but should I hang the canister if I'm going to be gone from camp all day? What do most people do?

On a winter hike one year I stayed on the other side of that bridge. ” Roan High Knob shelter is what I was thinking about, across the road and a bit of a climb from Carvers Gap(?). I read that it can be very cold so I bypassed it. ” That shelter has the coldest average temperature on the AT. But it has great tenting areas around the shelter.

That July forth weekend it got down to the upper 30’s at Roan High Knob shelter. Mumbles had a 50* bag, so he didn’t sleep much. So after waking up we just hiked to 19e and called it. ” Is the Trailplace Hiking Group still around? ” Yupp, still around. Looks like they run about $75. Not too bad. But they sure look heavy after eyeballing the carbon fiber canisters $$$. Quote from IMScotty: “Dmax, was it for a particular trail? I believe some have rental programs. I think you are correct, you are going to see them required in more-and-more places. Might be worth just making the investment. There is a weight penalty, but they make a good stool. ” it's for a hike out of Tahoe on the PCT/TRT. We're planning on hiking to Lake Aloha and using it for …

On a trip next year I will need a bear canister. I've read that it's best to rent one if you don't plan on using one all the time. I think places like REI rent them for $5 for a week. Some of the ranger stations have them for free rental. Sounds like a good deal. Not too many trails on the east coast require them . But I am starting to see some requiring them now. So do I rent or buy? Any recommendations?

I don't have a clue. My only reasonable guess would have been the "secret shelter" (which I've never seen). So I googled it -- nope! ” I figured as ugly that it is, that ugliness would give it away. I'll try to think of a clue since I'm sure all the regulars have seen the post.
