Quote from sheepdog: “Anyone who would burn a flag has most likely not bled for the flag. ” Right you are. And most of us who've been fortunate enough not to have been in harm's way also wouldn't do it. It just isn't respectful. But outlawing disrespect would be a very, very slippery slope. (The Flag Code doesn't have the force of law except at government installations. It's more to be thought of as a manual for how to display the flag properly, for the vast majority of us who want to display it…

I didn't buy any of the above. I got Northern Spy apples, a pumpkin for carving, some winter squash, and a few other odds and ends, and had lunch at their cafe. I have some strong cider and some perry at home, but you're right, blueberry?

  • Quote from CoachLou: “All those folks that ask me if I'm safe, do I carry a gun, what will I do if I meet a bad person.......... ....I remind them......... ....I'm the Boogeyman! ........................ ” I simply say that if I were carrying, it would be unwise to let everyone know, and if I weren't carrying, it would be unwise to let everyone know. I suspect that most hikers agree with me about whether or not to carry. But for the above reasons, I've never asked them.

One of the great paradoxes of freedom is that one of the things our flag stands for ... is the freedom to burn it. Banning burning it would be a diminution of liberty, and so would be a greater dishonor to those who fought and died for it than the burning itself. However proud you are of our great nation, national pride is meaningless if it's compelled. On the other hand, the umps would be well within their rights to penalize the home team for fan interference with the game, and burning anything…

  • If you're actually looking for a light one, Etowah has theirs on sale until Christmas.

  • The warning is a bit belated up here. No snow down in the valley yet, but we've had a couple of frosts. The hills are all snowcapped. One of my buddies reported snow a little more than boot-deep above about 3000 feet. But you southerners do as WOO says!

  • The thing I don't like about canisters is carrying the one that's either just run out or is just about to, as well as the full one. That said, I'm likely to get a canister stove in the next few months, because I expect that NY will have an extended fire ban this coming spring. I'd have got one this year, except that this past spring I was in no condition to backpack.

Quote from LIhikers: “I've decided I want t get a sighting compass to use for our boundary work along the AT. You see each surveyor's monument usually has 3 painted, witness marks on near-by trees or rocks, that help locate the monument. I want to collect the distance and heading from the monument for each witness mark. I had originally thought of making something with a 360 degree protractor and a base plate compass but now I'm thinking of just buying a compass. Can anybody suggest a good compa…

It surely isn't what we thought it would be. There have been financial issues along the w…

  • Quote from Datto: “One of the greatest joys I'd had on my AT thru-hike was meeting up with people who were entirely different than me.... I remember thinking to myself this place -- the AT -- was such a fabulous unique place ” That it is. It surely is. Full of people who are very different, one from another. Exempli gratia: You - a thru-hiker and raconteur. Me - a wordy guy (not nearly as good a raconteur) who doesn't aspire to be a thru-hiker but has more bag nights and trail miles than some of…

  • Quote from Da Wolf: “1st time thru-hikers need not read any of this crap ” Well, yeah. But some folks actually find Datto's writing entertaining, when it isn't infuriating, and sometimes even when it is.

  • Oh, and an aside to 'mental note' - How much booze does it take to get a camel lit up, and isn't that a waste of good ethanol?

  • I know I'm risking adding fuel to a fire here.... Datto, you're a very funny writer. I still remember the belly-laugh I got when reading the "umbrella drinks" scene in your PCT journal. I'm truly of two minds about some of your advice. I'm totally with you that a Big Hike is a massive task - and if it doesn't remain a priority, out of goal orientation, or fear of failure, or just plain cussedness, even when it isn't fun, it is Not Going To Happen. I totally get, too, that most people who can com…

Quote from sheepdog: “Quote from mental note: “I remember something about willow bark acting like aspirin. ” salix-19-728.jpg ” There's a reason that medical science improved on willow bark. One of the biggest reasons is that aspirin is better tolerated by patients than raw salicin (in doses sufficient to achieve the same therapeutic effect). Another is that aspirin is an acetylating agent, while salicin / salicol / salicylic acid are not. The acetylation of COX enzymes alters their function, ca…
