Walked up to the local pool complex this morning to drop something off to the Aquatics Manager. Staff were working on getting it ready to open this weekend. A duck family, Mama and 7 baby ducklings have taken up residence. Staff had procured new lane lines yesterday and were putting them into the 50 meter. Mama and the babies just hopped over them. Well, one or two of the ducklings had a little trouble and Mom had to give them a boost. Sorry I didn't take a picture but they were cute.

Quote from odd man out: “We saw a mother bear with cubs in Cades Cove, GSMNP today. It was pretty far away, so this is the picture we could get. You'll just have to believe me. ” I believe you. When we camped in Cades Cove for about 3-4 days in 1994, we saw about 8 bears in Cades Cove. Very exciting for our 10 yo daughter.

Took a walk today
PostHaven't been able to get out on any trails but I'm working part-time at the golf course at one of the entrances to the subdivision so now that spring has finally sprung, I've been walking to work several days this week and last. The flowering trees are so beautiful. I've decided I'd like a pink dogwood to replace the pine tree at the corner of the house that grew way too tall and my husband had cut down.

PostMy sister and I are going to hike in the Arc of Appalachia in southeastern Ohio for 4 days next week to see the wildflowers. We're not backpacking as she's reserved a cabin in the area. So, I need to get packed this weekend as we're leaving on Monday.

PostMy friend called me up last Friday to say that her SO was going on a boy's golfing trip to Hilton Head for 5 days and asked if I wanted to do a hiking trip. Well, I didn't have time so I said I could do a day hike. We went on Sunday to Island Lake State Recreation Area. There are about 4 diff hiking trails. I've been on 3 of them and I wanted to do the 4th which is the yellow trail. The yellow trail and the blue trail start from the same parking lot. Friend used the outhouse then we walked a sho…

PostAnd now #15 Princeton beat Missouri to progress to the Sweet Sixteen. The Big Ten went 5-3 in the first round. Three of those teams play tonight: Penn State, Northwestern and Maryland. I don't think any of them will get through to the Sweet Sixteen. Lastly, congrats to the Tennessee Volunteers for beating the Dukies!

My Dad would have loved that. I'm surprised that my husband didn't get me to go outside or that he didn't go out himself or even mention it.

PostQuote from odd man out: “I'm also a Spartan (went to grad school there from '81-'86). This year they are not doing well so I haven't really paid attention. Are they is consideration for the tournament? ” A very big part of the reason for the problems the Spartans have had were the injuries to SF Jaden Akins and PF Malik Hall. Also that there's no killer instinct. I kept yelling at the TV that the Spartans needed to put their feet on the necks of the Hawkeyes when they had the 13 pt lead with 94 …

Postmax, did you go? what can you share? When I asked siri what the score was, she said "Kennesaw St. edged past Queens University in the second round by a score of 67 to 66 yesterday. My Spartans were victorious last night, although it looked very dicey in the first half and early second. However, they outscored the Cornhuskers by 25 in the second half so won by a score of 80-67. whew. The game with Minnesota that was postponed due to the tragedy on our campus has now been cancelled so we will have…

I’ll add … You’re at a restaurant and stealthily stuff your pockets with small packets of condiments. ” Or you grew up during the depression. Quote from IMScotty: “Local story out near the Berkshires. They helped an old guy out of the woods before it got too cold last night. The video of the rescue is worth watching... boston.com/news/local-news/202…ed-in/?p1=hp_featurestack ” Good job by the rescue personnel! I agree with your description that the man was an old guy. I disagree with the reporter that he was elderly. Based on my observations of peeps currently and in the recent decades, here's my definition of peeps over 60: 60 - 69 y…

MLK Hike - 2023
PostGreat report Scotty! And beautiful pics. Thanks for those of us midwesterners and southerners who are too far away to come winter backpacking/camping with you hardy yanks (or should I say New Englanders). A little laugh at the hat incident. I've done similar with other objects, normally my phone. The Sharing of the Cheese sounds like it would be delicious.

Quote from IMScotty: “A clip from a Boston Globe article (behind a paywall) on the most recent fatality. Lt. Kneeland (of NH Fish & Game) was quoted in the article speaking against people hiking alone. I understand his perspective as a rescuer, but I also confess I do not want to be part of a world where 'hiking alone' is considered unreasonable. Perhaps these hikers with no Winter experience should not have hiked without more experienced guidance, but I oppose any blanket provisions against hik…

Took a walk today
PostThanks guys for the suggestions. They are twist locks. So, first I will try cleaning. We've had snow each of the last 3 days and more to come later today; total of about 7+" so far. So yesterday my friend & I went snowshoeing on the golf course that she lives on. Pretty strenuous but enjoyable as we were the only ones out so beautiful and peaceful. Saw a lot of deer tracks and some others that were probably squirrels as they went to trees and ended there. Warmed up with some chai tea.
