  • Took a walk today

    Post

Me, Kathy, and our son took a little walk today. We went to an ocean beach for a little stroll. There was a mostly clear blue sky with just a few clouds. The temperature was about 30 degrees and the wind was howling. We walked several miles along the beach and then walked inland a bit to get to the boardwalk that runs as a street between the houses. Then we walked the miles back to where we had parked the car. During our walk we saw lots of deer and some kind of small beach bird. We were at the …

Quote from IMScotty: “Great report LIHikers. Sorry to hear that Tora is showing her years. Sounds like you saw plenty of people on your hike. Would you say MLK weekend was more crowded this year than in the past? ” Definitely more crowded than in years past. Of course that might be because the weather was much more mild than in years past.

Kathy and I have been working on the Long Path between New York city and Harriman state park in day hikes. So on Saturday we drove north and at about 12:30 parked the car on the side of a road right where the Long Path goes into Harriman. From there we hiked south, away from the park, until we got to the point where we had left off last weekend. We took a quick snack break and then hiked back to the car. There we donned our packs and hiked the Long Path into the park. We followed it to the Big H…

Quote from odd man out: “We have lots of multi use trails in our area, mostly on old RR right of ways (rail trails). But wondering if anyone has experience doing a long distance hike on one of these. It seems the flat straight nature of rail lines would make for a rather uninteresting. PLUDs (pointless lack of up and downs?) instead of PUDs. On the other hand, this could make it more interesting: "State officials partnered with brewers to create an Empire State Trail Brewery Passport that allows…

I'm thinking right where that trail splits would be a good place for an upscale hiker/biker bed and breakfast. I've done a little on line real estate browsing but nothing says "buy me" . I might have to take a drive up there.

I don't know what the usual MLK group is doing this weekend. Kathy and I are putting our packs together for our very own MLK, 2 night trip to Harriman State Park. We don't have a plan for which trails or places to camp we'll use, that'll be decided on the fly.

My day pack is an old EMS pack that I've been using for more than 20 years. No wonder EMS is no longer what they once were. Their stuff lasts too long.

Quote from IMScotty: “Rented a Toyota Carmry this weekend and mmostly enjoyed the experience except for one major problem... the 'Driver's Assist Technology.' Good grief, I get nagged enough at home, I certainly do not want a car that starts beeping at me if I cross a line. Since all the car companies are doing this it looks like I will never buy a new car again. ” I can relate to what Scotty wrote and feel very much the same way.
