Hiking Miles 2020
PostHow many miles did you hike in 2020? - Please include all trails, not just the AT. - All miles hiked, not just new ones (I know some of some of us do a lot of out and backs, or local trails we hit hit often). - To make it look simpler I just put the levels, but 100 would be 100-249, 250 would be 250-499, etc..

PostQuote from max.patch: “If you were planning on going to Tuscaloosa, Alabama you might want to change your plans. I saw pictures yesterday of people lined up to get into bars at 1:00 pm yesterday -- 7 hours before the game started. pbs.twimg.com/media/ErgjN1lXAAIQX1B?format=jpg&name=medium ” I don't think that qualifies under socially disctanced.

PostQuote from max.patch: “A 12 year is going to attend Ga Tech in the fall. He's either really smart or Ga Tech isn't all it's cracked up to be. Actually...he started reading at 11 months and went to 1st grade at age 2. Right now he's finishing up his soph year at a technical college and getting high school credits at the same time. He said his toughest year was when he started middle school becasue he was so much younger than everyone else so he wasn't accepted as a peer. Going to studey aerospace…

Corona Virus and the Trail
Astro - - Trail Health
PostI am currently scheduled for February. My wife is a High School teacher and starting last week can get a test every Monday. While none of us have had any symptoms since the funeral, since she was exposed more than any of us, it was nice when she got a negative result last week.

PostQuote from LIhikers: “Yesterday saw us back on the Long Path for 8 miles. 26 degrees when we started and 32 when we finish. The sky was gray all day with a high, 100% overcast, and there was a moderate breeze. One photo I can share appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…438c142c216447e0f6d53307f ” Impressive yo go 180*, mine are usually only 90* off.

PostQuote from Astro: “Started listening to Trail Tales. Don't care much for the host, but the guests are really interesting. Currently 77, they run around an hour, and he drops one nearly every week, so it will keep me going for a while. ” Since I caught up with Trail Tales I have also started listening to Hiking Thru where I am about 7 months in (to June 2019). Very interesting contrast with Trail Tales where it is more like a Frat boy atmosphere, while Hiking Thru host is more laid back like a we…

PostQuote from Astro: “Mike Rowe this year has added an extended discussion after the How I Heard podcast. The actual story is still around 5-8 minutes, but then he goes on an extra 10 minutes or so about how he came up with or decided to do it. I like it, but if you don't you can just listen to the story and skip it. ” Now in support of the chapters his new book Mike Rowe is doing ~40 minute podcast which include discussion with his childhood friend who produces the podcast.

Just finished a 6 mile walk in the 30s. While I much prefer warmer temperatures, at least it wasn't raining like much of the past few weeks have been.

Quote from Trillium: “Quote from LIhikers: “I'm still hoping for snow ” Me too. We've had almost no snow this season. What we got last weekend was only about 1/2" average; at our house, a little less; up where we hiked at the State Park, a little more. I've never been snowshoeing and my sister said she'd take me when we get enough snow. So, snow, where are you? ” Now that I through driving near the IN/MI boarder I hope you get as much snow as you want.

Article from the Trek about a gear list for "older hikers". I know that is a relative term, but they went with 50+, which I believe covers a lot of the regulars at the Cafe. Now the list is for the author's Mom so the guys may not be able to relate as much to exact clothing, but I thought the discussion about factoring in comfort was interesting. I personally just took on a few extra ounces for a one person Big Agnes Tiger Wall over anothe Fly Creek with the side entry door being the biggest dif…

PostTommy Lasorda RIP Tommy Lasorda was like Dick Vitale in that most people loved him although his abundant enthusiasm and positive mental attitude rubbed some the wrong way. Great story teller. Many fond memories of him from my visits to Spring Training in Dodgertown (Vero Beach, FL). Favorite was when Steve Sax (my favorite player at the time) was signing autographs and Tommy telling him they had to go and he let him sign one more for a kid, and my Mom asked how about one more for a grandma and T…

Trailhead Parking
PostLooking to buy a new vehicle later this year (probably a 2021 after the 2022 models come out), and trying to decide what type. When parking at trailheads I always feel "a little safer" or "less advertising" with a trunk than an exposed back like an SUV or van. On the other hand I see two definite advantages of an SUV. First is higher clearance and probably more appropriate for some FS and county roads to access some trailheads. Second is if I ever wanted to I could always lay down the back seats…

Quote from max.patch: “Quote from LIhikers: “Yep, I don't handle the heat well. I've been to the hospital emergency room twice, over the years, for heat stroke. ” As one who grew up in Florida, I have no doubt that if I attempted the dog sled trip you and wife took in MN that you told us about I would have ended up in the ER. Or worse. Tip -- don't plan on hiking GA in August. ” I have hiked in GA in late July and on into NC in early August. Not a problem for me, but just like the yearly MLK hik…
