Quote from odd man out: “After graduating from college I went with a couple friends on a weekend loop hike that included climbing Old Rag. I think Old Rag can also be done as a day hike starting from the bottom rather than fro Skyline Drive. ” Around 73/74, me and some HS buddies went to hike up Old Rag. We mostly hiked in with.....beer. Going up was, interesting. Crawling thru some of the rocks on the path we took (I don't remember which trail it was). The view from the summit was great. We hik…

REI has the Sawyer Squeeze on sale so I'm thinking of giving it a try. Those of you who use it happy with it? I've owned a few filters over the years but always mailed them home when on a hike as they were just too bulky. The Squeeze doesn't have that issue. Texas. We set an all time high for August 29 here in DFW yesterday of 106. THI was over 110. Brutal to be out in the afternoon. We had a storm outflow boundary over us early this morning so it dropped to 75 with half inch of rain! Dog and I did a 3 mile hike but my noon the humidity was going full blast. Most of the state is under heat advisory right now.

Dog and I did a 3 mile hike, half in a small forest by us (is flood plain for the lake). We were trucking along and I spotted something brown moving heading our direction (south) off trail. I stopped, dog stopped. There was a nice large well fed coyote, which also stopped to look thru the brush at us. It then stealthy moved away. I could tell my 100 pound part "sled dog" didn't see it or I'd be getting pulled down the trail. I just waited 30 seconds and then we moved down the trail. I could tell…

  • If any of you know or have purchased gear from "Kat", her home in California has burned in the fires. There is a GoFundMe, which quickly went over the amount people were seeking to assist her and her husband. If you are on Backpacking Light you probably already saw this and perhaps donated. There are several write ups about what all they are doing. Her husband Chris is a mechanic and he is moving trucks and keeping generators running for the fire fighters. I've purchased several Mesh Tarp Sleeve…

On that same trip, we had a Whip-or-Will across the river from us. It started up around 11 PM. Would make noise for 20 minutes. Shut up for 10, start up again. Went on most of the night. We didn't get much sleep. Next morning I said "thing finally shut up around 4 AM". My friend said "yeah, now I hope the rest of the forest keeps the dang thing up all DAY like it kept the entire forest up all NIGHT".

We had my father-in-law at the oral surgeon last week. They back up to a green belt. Sudden flurry of activity as a LARGE bobcat was walking along the creek back there. We have a large Texas lake within a mile of that office so lots of wildlife. Some can really freak people out. The receptionist said they see bobcats fairly often and try and take a photo. Some 8 years ago, I was with a buddy on a canoe trip on the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas. There was close to no one around as w…
