Hiked 6 mi in Frozen Head SP today. A few weeks ago, I realized that I’ve hiked most of the trails in the park so made a goal to hike all of them. It was muggy and buggy. My new shoes were okay but I still had pain in my left foot traveling up to my knee...likely because I unconsciously change my gait, putting strain on my knee. Ugh. If my foot didn’t hurt, I could hike more miles. The only pic I took was of my lunch, lol. It was couscous with chickpeas, olives, pepperoni, and fermented vegetabl…

I was on YouTube watching some AT videos when I noticed on the "up next" menu an interesting Chief Hiking Officer application that I was surprised to see. It's from one of our old friends -- good luck Allyson aka Clarity! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGcYzSOli5s ”…

  • I listened to a Backpacker Radio podcast with Sarah Jones Decker (trail name Harvest) about her new book on Appalachian trail shelters. She’s a very interesting person...a photographer who lives on a farm near Hot Springs. She used photos of shelters from friends but also hiked to shelters with her toddler on her back. The book looks great and is going on my wish list. She asks people to order directly from her website if possible as she gets a larger percentage of the sale and she will sign the…

I’ve been spending a lot of time in my DIY hammock in the backyard...it’s so comfortable and peaceful. Nearly every day, I lay in it and knit, watching the birds and squirrels. At night, I turn off all the lights and watch the fireflies. But I’ve had a few incidents, even though I always check the straps and ends before sitting in it. A few years ago, I told y’all about a strap that tore when my daughter was in the hammock and she fell to the ground. We couldn’t figure out why it tore. I finally…

So I finally took it on a trip and it seems to be a great summer quilt... the perfect temp and very comfortable.

Hammocking is becoming more popular with the younger crowd and I doubt half of them read the warnings and instructions or research hammock safety.

The lines create a mechanical advantage that in a 'low angle' hang can create shear forces much greater than the weight of the person in the hammock. Just a few days ago two young girls were killed in a hammock... wmur.com/article/they-were-bea…ammock-collapse/32946526# ” Tragic!

Y’all probably don’t remember, but my first solo overnight attempt was on the FHT and it was a disaster. I was so afraid to camp by myself that I did something very risky...I hitchhiked and accepted a ride with 2 very sketchy men. I was so freaked out about camping alone that I lost all sense of judgment! I remember the feeling like it was yesterday of staring at that campsite and trying to make myself set up my tent...i just couldn’t do it so I walked out to the road and caught a ride back to m…

My next hike is going to be Standing Indian loop and it’s coming up very soon. I’ve been looking forward to it for a long time! But I googled driving distance today and it’s the same driving time as going to Table Rock on the Foothills Trail. So then I start thinking that maybe I should go back to the FHT and finish the last 12 miles. It would be very satisfying to finish but I don’t know, it would be more fun with cooler temps... Tough decisions!

They’ve been closing on Wednesdays during the warmer months for a while...7 years maybe (?). It’s a lot of fun but there’s just as much traffic driving up on a Wednesday as on a normal day, in fact there’s probably more traffic. I made the mistake of riding my bike from Townsend up to Cade’s Cove on a Wednesday, thinking traffic would be lighter...it sucked.
