On the local news the other night the metrologist gave a weather forecast I had not heard before. "Almost Sunny". December in West MI is Never Sunny, so I think almost sunny is the best we could hope for.

  • OK, not really hiking, but mountaineering. There are only 14 mountains in the world with peaks over 8000 m above sea level. In 1986, the legendary mountain climber Reinhold Messner became the first person to climb all of them. It took him 16 years, 3 months, and 19 days to finish. The following year another legendary climber, Jerzy Kukuczka, finished all 8000 peaks, taking just 7 years, 11 months, and 14 days to do it. Since then, only 41 people have accomplished this feat, but none did it faste…

I've had lot of different cranberry sauce and relish dishes over the years. But for me, the best is the recipe on the bag. It's one of those recipes that is incredibly simple but can't be improved. 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 1 bag cranberries. Boil until the berries pop. Chill. Eat.

We go to a friend's house for Thanksgiving every year. Each person in the group gets a cooking assignment. Every year I am required to bring the stuffing and pecan pie. For the stuffing recipe I just improvise. For the pie, I have for decades made this one, which is probably the best pecan pie recipe on the planet. Honey Crunch Pecan Pie I also teach my biochemistry students a bit of the biology and physiology of turkeys so when asked "light or dark meat", they can reply "I'll have some of the m…

Perhaps it is regional. I know the Michigan State Univ turf grass research center has a long term study (20 years now) where two identical plots of grass treated the same all year, but every fall, one plot gets a thick layer of dead leaves that are mulched and the other is kept raked clean. Year after year, thw mulched grass is just as good as the raked and has fewer weeds..

It is as if we are no longer free to sh…

didn't baseball used to have 2 very large divisions per leage? In that case, I thought the wild card system made sense. Now that there are smaller divisions, I can see having only the winner of the division go through. But with only 3 divisions, you need a 4th to get single elimination playoffs. So how about adding one more expansion team per league and reorganize into 4 divisions with 4 teams each and have not wild card? Then we can argue over which city should get the expansion teams and which…

Quote from Astro: “Loved the homerun and the player, but I guess I am still a little too old school to appreciate carrying the bat. ” When I was in grad school, I coached our intra-mural softball team. Typical of most science graduate programs, there were many international students and most of them had no clue how to play softball, so I got to be coach/teacher. We had a guy from Sweden who was particularly enthusiastic so ever time he got a hit he would fling his bat and nearly take the head of…
