My son has ditched me to hang out with some girls Friday night. The nerve! He says he is still going to hike with me on Saturday but that remains to be seen. It looks like we’ll end up in the Smokies. kids...

I splurged on a handmade sourdough starter crock. My starter is going to be so happy to not be in those ugly plastic containers. They already love it, I woke up to them spilling out of the container, making a big mess. I’ve been interested in fermenting for a while and also bought a water-sealed fermenting crock. It’s so beautiful! Unfortunately, the lid broke in transit so the potter is making another. No matter, I put a bowl upside down on the crock and have red cabbage, beets, apple, and ging…

She’s been looking at them for several years. She found one she can afford, had it inspected, and it has a lot of rust on the undercarriage plus needs new tires. It also doesn’t have a heater which worries me. Otherwise it has everything she wants. Her budget is small, $13,000-18,000 Can anyone recommend a security sy…

Quote from jimmyjam: “How about the section just south of 19E? Leave your car at the Mountain Harbour B&B hostel, great balds to hike over. ” That’s a good idea but I’ve hiked that section several times and it’s about a 2 hr drive from my house, making it nearly 4 for my son. He only has Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. He lives in Chattanooga so I’ve been thinking that a section in GA might be better for him (?) Ugh, it’s so much pressure. If it were only me, it wouldn’t be a big deal…

Quote from Astro: “Big Thank You to all the Veterans out there who served our country to protect our freedom!!! ” My music group (25 of us playing fiddle, guitar, viola, mandolin) had an amazing time playing and singing for a packed room (SRO) at an assisted living center. The seniors really enjoyed the performance of patriotic music and many of them cried. We honored the major branches of the armed forces by playing each theme song and inviting the veterans to stand if they were able. It was ve…

I tested out my new Caldera Cone and Zojin stove this morning, it’s amazing. I poured about 17ml of denatured alcohol into the stove and had a good boil within minutes (didn’t time it). Stability has been an issue with my favored cooking system and the caldera cone felt extremely stable and easy to use. I bought the Inferno insert for wood burning but don’t have a safe place for testing it at home. It’s possible to use the Caldera cone for wood burning without an Inferno but the Inferno insert a…

Im planning a trip for my son and myself the weekend before thanksgiving and need some ideas. He has only backpacked once and it wasn’t the ideal experience. We still had fun but I want this trip to be better. I think he will really enjoy hiking on the AT and possibly meeting some SOBO’s. I’d like to hike a section with shelters available in case of bad weather but don’t want to do the section n GSMNP. I also don’t want to drive a long way from Knoxville and want to hike a section that I haven’t…

Did a crazy thing and spent a lot of $ on a caldera cone, 900ml ti pot, and the Inferno. I was intrigued with having one system capable of multiple fuel sources, especially the wood burning option. While the Inferno isn’t required for wood burning, it seems safer and more environmentally friendly than using the caldera cone by itself. Can’t wait until it arrives.

Sorry I haven’t been visiting the cafe and keeping up with everyone. Maybe it’s time to shake the dust out of the curtains and invest in an espresso machine! Life has been weird and I’ve been static this summer...been a little depressed, I guess. My house is on the market which sucks cuz I can’t travel very far in case someone wants to look at it. More than likely it won’t sell until spring which is disappointing. Let me tell you, a clean house is OVERRATED. I sooooo want to leave all my dirty d…
