  • 2nd Chance Hiker

Traffic Jam - - Pacific Crest Trail

    Post

Quote from max.patch: “lol, i guess i don't need to waste any time replying to a post made yesterday that has since disappeared... ” I deleted it. It seemed to be trolling by someone who joined yesterday for the sole purpose of bashing a hiker. I thought about it for a while beforehand and even formulated a long reply in my mind. I also considered taking a vote and seeing if y’all wanted it to stay. I can’t bring it back but I can re-post it if y’all think I should.

Called to arrange my shuttle and decided on the fly to get a later start and hike low miles on day 1. It just felt right and sounded like the least stressful option. Fingers crossed that something doesn’t happen to mess up my plans. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that bear activity on that stretch concerns me. Bear bagging isn’t a skill of mine. I’m a sleep-with-your-food kind of person but don’t think it’s a good idea on this trip.

  • I take back everything negative I’ve ever said about Girl Scouts. The girl has had a fantastic experience. Never in a million years would I think she’d be herding cows and working with the local cowboys to keep the cows contained. I think this experience could shape the rest of her life.

  • Totally awesome. That’s taking adversity and turning it into a triumph. Made me cry.

Thanks for all the info, JJ. I’m thinking about your first option...shuttling to Grayson Highlands and hiking 11.8 the first day. There’s no reason I can’t get up super early and be in Damascus by 8. Any suggestions on where to shower after the hike? I’ll have a 7ish hr drive to PA. Does M.R Outfitters have showers?

Thank you for the info! What would you do if you had 3 nights? I wouldn’t mind a shorter first day, 11.8 mi after getting up very early, driving a few hours and catching a shuttle might be tough.

Quote from IMScotty: “JJ, Might not hurt to do further monitoring and get a second opinion. SS ” I second that. There are different types of cardiac Dr’s. If your cardiologist isn’t an electrophysiologist, you may want to consult one. They are the experts on the hearts electrical activity. Another suggestion is to write down all your questions before the appointment and ask the Dr to show you the EKG and explain exactly what’s happening with your heart.

Part of me is wondering if it is all still from being on the dilitiziam for so long, that maybe it will stop in a week. Who knows?Anyway if you are still planning on hiking the Highlands next week or the one after, I'd be glad to share my notes on mileage/water/campsites if you want them. I'm still planning on rehiking that piece this ye…

The bear sat in the middle of the trail, staring at me. He wasn’t close (which is why the pic is blurry) but I saw him right away and stopped. I decided it was a good place to turn around after quickly snapping a photo. He was the second bear I saw this morning. The first one was in the overgrowth next to the trail and sauntered off when he saw me, only showing his backside. Here’s a better perspective of distance.

Not bread but today I baked two apple pies and some mini chessecake tarts. The tarts are a new recipe that I’m trialing. After baking, the tarts went in the fridge for a while to cool. I took them out but couldn’t get them out of the pan, they were stuck. Four were ruined and had to be eaten straight from the pan (oh darn). Tried to brainstorm and figure out a different method but after they sat for a bit, they popped right out.

Quote from jimmyjam: “Well it's looking like my NH-ME trip is going to get scrapped. I've been on a med for PVCs for years and started getting too slow of a heart rate from it. My cardiologist took me off it, been one week, and put me on just Liprinosol for BP. I immediately started having dizziness from the low heart rate and feeling awful from I guess withdrawals after being on dilitiziam for 5 years. All kinds of awful symptoms: headache, shortness of breath, light headedness, hoarseness, dia…
