I can’t speak highly enough of the Basic French Bread recipe from Julia Child. If you’re interested in bread baking, this is a great one to start with. Start it around 11 am and you’ll have fresh bread for dinner. I’ve been thinking how to make this on the trail. The cooking part is the problem.

Once there your choices are ... 1) To the top of Mount Washington 2) Back down the way you came on the Lion's Head trail, a wet difficult hand-over-hand rock scramble. It is way harder going down than up. 3) Cutting across the Alpine Garden and coming down the treacherous Tuckerman Ravine trail (which I think is what the rest of the family must have done)…

  • My favorite beetle is the ladybug. Funny, I listened to Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band today. Don’t know much about any of them except I remember one of them marrying some young hottie and they got in a fight at a hotel so she threw the ring out the window...or something like that.

It’s the same camp I attended as a kid and didn’t do very well. I was the kid that got a stomachache every day because I was homesick. ” Here is to hoping she has a better experience. ” Yeah, I’m so proud...she’s been promoted several times, from counselor to adventure specialist to program director. She’s now second in command. That gi…

Quote from Trillium: “A friend is taking her 2 oldest grandsons (9 & 10) and their 2 friends backpacking this weekend. It's a program through the state Natural Resources Dept. So, it's a 5 mile hike today, camp tonight and hike back out tomorrow. Well, she had little to no equipment and no knowledge about hiking, much less backpacking. So, she contacted the person that she knew who had the most experience (yours truly). In talking with her earlier in the week, it was determined that all she woul…

There was a break in the rain today so I excitedly threw the bike on the carrier, hopped in the car, and drove to my usual cycling spot. Cycled for a little over an hour but not sure how far I rode cuz the watch died. It was hot and humid...I’m not tolerating the heat very well this summer.

Quote from LIhikers: “Riding home from work this past Monday I was nearly run down by a car. I was pedaling straight through an intersection with a green light and noticed a car on the side street to the right accelerating toward a red light. It slowed a bit but went through the red light right toward me. In a split second I decided that I wasn't going to be run over that day and thought I'd try to leap to the SUV's hood. As the vehicle neared I pulled my feet from the toe clips and stood up on …

Abysmal hiking conditions for me lately. The planned hike to Damascus was canceled due to other obligations. I was very bummed so planned to hike a few miles and spend the night in SNP on my way to see the grand baby last week but that didn’t work out either. Not sure when I’ll get to hike, next week is music camp so all my time is spent practicing and memorizing tunes. But if that’s all I have to be sad about, my life is pretty damn wonderful! Hope everyone is doing great.

Instead, my plan is to hike 40 miles on the AT from Fox Creek to Damascus. The shuttle is arranged. I’m bummed about the FHT but excited about the AT hike. It’s likely to be busy and I’m not used to that so have some anxiety about stuff like bathing, bodily functions, and being social. I don’t have a clue what this section is like. Th…

And I’ve ventured into dessert baking. Danger Will Robinson! Hopefully I’ll give it away, not eat it. Homemade lemon shortbread tarts and (pre-baked) cinnamon rolls.

Today’s bread...harvest grain from the bread machine. Recently, I made a basic, French bread, recipe from Julia Child and it was outstanding. And so, so simple...using only 4 ingredients, flour, yeast, salt, and water.

  • Nope...playing at a Scottish festival.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Does anyone even know what that commemorates?... I think it’s just an excuse to party. Anyway, the local liquor store was doing tequila tastings. I know nothing about tequila and initially declined since I was sipping a coffee, but then decided to try some. It was pretty good. I tasted two Mi Campo types, a blanco and a reposado. I think the difference between the two is the reposado is aged longer. It was my favorite so a bottle found it’s way into my cart.
