Anyone remember or watch the TV show The Biggest Loser? I always thought it would be great if they got a consultant who really know something about backpacking to lead the contestants on a week long hike to see what happens.

Viola da gama is not quite a cello. The cello is in the violin family (with the viola). All have 4 strings tuned in 5ths. Viols have more strings and tuned with a variety of intervals, commonly 4ths. The shape is different. The modern double bass used in orchestras is shaped and tuned like a viol (although it only has 4 strings). And if you would like to try composing your own baroque ditty, try yesterday's Google Doodle. Here is my attempt a familiar melody written by my cousin (with simplified…

I've done the north part of the triple crown section (but didn't get past MacAfee Knob). I especially enjoyed the two ridges south of Dragon's Tooth. I hauled water up so I could dry camp in the rocks on Sinking Creek Mtn. Best campsite ever. Also did the north half of SNP. Great views. But I never use shelters and SNP has fewer camp options, although I did find two great spots.

I made a rally nice variation on a Sazerac last night. Your traditional Sazerac recipe is: - Rinse a rocks glass with Absinthe and drain the excess. - Muddle a sugar cube with a little water and a few dashes of Peychaud's bitters - Add Rye and/or Cognac with ice. - Stir to blend/chill/dilute and strain into a chilled rocks glass that has been rinsed with Absinthe. - Twist a lemon peel over to expel some of the oils into the drink and serve up with the twist. I don't have Absinthe, but I do have …

Quote from StalkingTortoise: “I tried out yet another Manhattan recipe last night; 2 parts bourbon 1 part port wine (tawny port preferred) 3 dashes of bitters Now I have three 'favorite' Manhattan recipes. Smooth, tasty, and just different enough to keep things interesting. ” I too have been practicing with bourbon mixtures. I found the last Manhattan I ordered in a bar to be too sweet. I need to buy some vermouth to get the ratios the way I like it. I suppose maybe port is lees sweet than sweet…

Quote from max.patch: “i thot this was cool... youtube.com/watch?v=DCPwOKvwugc ” This happened to me last week. A couple of turkeys decided to wander across the road right in front of me. They were in no hurry and I had to come to a complete stop. They were just a few feet in front of me. It was a rural road and no other cars were around. In my case there were only a couple of hens. There was not male to act as a crossing guard.

We actually started SPD really early because 2 weeks ago we got to see the Chieftans perform. We go to at least one Irish music festival a year, but never got to see the Chieftans before. We may also watch an Irish film. I tend to like Irish movies as they have great music, beautiful scenery, clever dialog, and they don't let reallity interfere with a good story. My favorites are The Secret of Roan Inish and Waking Need Devine. The latter is set in Ireland but is actually Manx, and the last 15 m…

Quote from LIhikers: “I've heard of bangers and mash but what the heck is it? Why don't folks from the UK speak English?.... : ) ” Bangers and Mash are sausages and mashed potatoes, usually seved with gravy. The Brits have a nice collection of food with funny names, such as Toad in the Hole, Bubble and Squeek, and Spotted Dick.

I grew up just outside of DC. The Library of Congress was one of my favorite places to visit. I especially liked the main reading room. But you were only supposed to go in if you were doing research, so I would just walk In to look around for a few minutes until they asked me to leave. I suppose security is a lot tighter now. Next time I am in town, maybe I will use my University credentials to get a pass and come up with some obscure book I supposedly need to look at, just so I can get in.
