Quote from odd man out: “I always figured if you really don't want to be on a jury you just say something really inappropriate when you are interviewed, such as "jury nullification" ” Is it just a coincidence that I haven't been picked to serve on jury ever since my brother-in-law became a police officer

I bought my latest pair of winter boots with plenty of room so I could use multiple pairs of socks. Thinking back to our January trip to Minnesota, my feet got cold from the ground up through the soles, I think. I'm wondering if anyone has used some kind of insulating inner sole to keep the cold out. I'd be interested to hear about materials and brands.

  • Kathy mentioned something about us having a little over $40 in dividends. That's just enough to get myself in trouble at REI but not enough to buy anything worth while.

Beautiful day here on Long Island. Clear blue skies and temps in the 40s with no wind.

It was a beautiful day here on the island today, clear blue skies and temps in the high 40s. First Kathy and I went to Sears and did our part to help the economy by buying a new washing machine then we went to a county park and did about an hour's walk. We saw one lone deer that didn't seem particularly afraid of us or our dog, that's probably not a good thing.

Despite waking up to 5 to 6 inches of snow yesterday Kathy and I got off Long Island to do some hiking. We left later than originally planned and started walking right around noon. We went north on New York's Long Path, starting where we ended on January 1st. Going north we walked, slipped and slid for 3.63 miles to where the trail comes into the town of Central Nyack. We then walked back into the woods a short way and sat down on a downed tree to eat our lunch. It was a delight to sit and do no…

It's snowing right now. I have no idea how much as I haven't been outside yet. Kathy and I have plans to go to the Long Path and do some walking. There's been a 5 car accident on the George Washington Bridge so if we go may depend on traffic reports. Some day I'm gonna move to the continental United States and not have to worry about bridges and tunnels.

Kathy and I have used HAWK Vittles meals any number of times. While the portions are good what I really like is his choice of meals. There are flavors and combinations you don't find in the usual commercial backpacking meals.

It was a nice day here on Long Island so Kathy and I took our dog, Tora, out for a relaxed walk on the Nassau/Suffolk Trail. Just for fun I took our son's GPS with us so I know we walked 3.81 miles at an average moving speed of 2.4 miles an hour and that our elevation was mostly between 45 and 66 feet above seal level. The thing can give more info than I really want to know.

My wife and I are members of Rails To Trails Concervancy so I guess you could say we'd be willing to pay for bicycle trails. Occasionally we've donated above and beyond our membership amount because we enjoy bicycling and think it's a worth while activity.
