As I was out there shoveling my healthy 22 year old daughter trudged by me through the snow (I hate it when people walk on snow I am about to shovel) and said, "I have to go to the gym." I wonder if she saw the irony in this? A half hour later my wife did the same thing, but she gets a pass.

I have only 4-5 inches in my yard, a bit of a disappointment. It rained afterwards and now there is a hard, heavy crust on top. Very unpleasant to shovel. I probably made a mistake in shoveling the walkway this morning, because it is still icing out and now I have a new layer of ice on the walk. I am heating up the cars now to try to make it easier to chip this stuff off. I wonder what it is like in Harriman today?

No symptoms, that is a good sign, but just be aware some people show no symptoms during the acute phase. When I was in Costa Rica I had a guide whose brother had heart damage from Chagas. The guide said he never went to bed until he searched his room to eliminate Assassin Bugs. They 'kiss you" around the lips when you sleep. Just like with Lyme disease it may be difficult in this country to find a Dr. who takes Chagas seriously. Maybe in Texas where it is beginning to show up more.

I have lived my life cautiously LI Hiker, perhaps too cautiously. I have no experience with this or words of wisdom to share, but that does not stop me from being full being full of opinions I guess the real question here is can you retire? If you can, than your options become easier. If you would like to keep your current job a while longer, but you you have the option to retire, then the summer off can become a demand not a request. If you need to keep working then waiting seems wiser. Every y…

I'll estimate about 320 miles this year. Hiked another 270 miles of the PCT (less than I had hoped). Another 15 miles of the Long Trail. And the balance in various Day Hikes. Hoping to complete 400 PCT miles in 2019, but these will be desert miles and I do seem to have trouble with those.

The town I grew up in is like that, all the little woodlots and fields that we use to play in are gone, condos and houses and such. I now live further out from the city. Still some woods here, but all the private land is being developed. None of the kids in this town seem to play in the woods anyway. They are too busy on their smart phones, or playing video games. They stay indoors, they being raised as human veal. Of course it is wrong to criticize my brother without looking at the mote in my o…

Quote from LIhikers: “Kathy and I don't know where we'll move to in retirement but we have decided the place has to have a "real" winter, whatever that means. ” To me that means cold enough for ponds to freeze for ice fishing, and enough snow for snow shoeing and skiing at least for a bit of the year. Some years Mass. barely qualifies.

Actually, I took this walk yesterday. So I have been very busy with work the past 4 months. Someone abruptly left so I had my day classes, and their night classes which were new to me, and then working through the weekend on a class I am a student in. No time for walking or exercise. It is amazing how quickly the body gets out of shape. I feel like crap now, and was short of breath after a short, flat 2 mile walk yesterday. Now that the semester is drawing to a close my resolution is to go on at…
