Quote from odd man out: “So my new hobby/interest is competing in the Team Trivia contest at the local brew pub every Tuesday. Been going for a couple months. So far I've had two third place and one first place finishes good for 50$ in gift cards at the brew pub, which is pretty good considering I don't have a team since apparently I have no friends. So if I keep winning I can drink for free. I'll admit its a bit of a rush for a team of one old fart to beat a whole table full of youngsters. ” I …

Best of luck on whatever you decide. I too have thought along those lines, but at age 59.8 I'm still too far away from retirement to pull that trigger and have too many people (and bank) who need my paycheck to risk the other option. You certainly ask lots of great questions. Sorry I don't have any answers to all your great questions.

Quote from max.patch: “wow...believe it or not... Doo doo doo doo doo doo! A delightful song (or grating, never-ending slog, if you're a parent of a young child) about a family of sharks scouring the seas for their next meal has made its way to the Billboard Hot 100. The uber-viral "Baby Shark" charted at No. 32 for the week ending Jan. 12. It boasted 20.8 million streams last week, according to Nielsen Music, alongside its already gargantuan 2 billion-plus YouTube views. If you haven't heard th…

Nice. Those boardwalks are beautiful. I can sympathize with the beach walk. The Great Lake water levels are up and many of our beaches have become narrow or non-existent.

  • Welcome to the cafe Troplop. You will have to tell us where that name comes from. Grad school studying what???? Not sure why your plans would be impossible. If you were thinking about the weather, I wouldn't think that should be too much of an issue. I've not hiked that far south yet, but I've done some VA hikes in mid summer and it wasn't so bad. I was worried about the heat but it wasn't really an issue for me. The southern 200 miles of the AT are at a pretty high elevation so the heat shouldn…

That is very nice. However I was wondering. There are a lot of places that prohibit the scattering of ashes. I wonder if this site has any restrictions on posting locations where this might violate some rule, or if posting such a location might get someone in trouble. Not that I care. I think that these rules are much ado about nothing. I think if I were do to something like this, I might also consider marking the spot with a lasting monument that would follow the spirit of LNT. You could, for e…

About five years ago II got a 40 deg quilt from UGQ with treated down. Recently when shopping for a three season quilt, I went back to their web site and see they no longer use treated down. They say it did not retain it's loft and tended to clump. Concerned my 40 deg quilt may suffer from this problem I sent them an e mail asking if it would be possible or advisable to have my quilt restuffed, and of so what the cost would be. They said that restuffing would not be recommended for a 40 deg quil…

Here we have an odd man, out in front of the partially reconstructed ruins of the Library at Ephesus, in Turkey. After Alexandria and Pergamum, this was considered the greatest library of antiquity. For thousands of years, these storehouses of knowledge were the cornerstones of civilization, culture, economy, and power. Wise rulers knew that those who had the knowledge controlled the world and invested their fortunes in information technology. But, the 21st century will go down as a watershed mo…
