Quote from chief: “I still can't wrap my head around the concept of retirement and employment existing at the same time. ” Simple concept for me. When I turn 60, retire from the full-time job that requires me to have all the answers on a moment's notice and the possibility of flying to China every time my Asian colleagues have found a new shortcut that causes product failures. Apply for a part-time position at my local ski resort that will give me some income (and free skiing) in the months when…

Quote from max.patch: “the 2005 championship game held in the orange bowl when ashlee simpson got booed off the stage is no longer the worst halftime show in ncaa football championship history. ” I texted my son for his impression on Lil Wayne's performance since he likes rap musicians. His reply - "Yeah, that was bad. Don't do drugs kids."

I'm happy with the result of the Championship game. We're an ACC family since my kids' schools represent 33% of the 12 ACC teams. And it's easier to accept Pitt's loss to Clemson in this year's ACC Championship game since it was to the eventual #1 team. H2P!

80 AT miles in 2018 along with a dozen or two miles of hiking at my local state park or exploring in China and Malaysia. A winter storm warning pruned 13 miles off my spring hike in TN / NC and a delayed start cost me 12.4 miles in the Whites. Still, a good year with great views. But I did get a hardscaping project completed on the side of my house. My inspiration was the terraces at Machu Picchu. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…b0c60646a7eb96e9e86614261

I received a guidebook for the Tuscany region of Italy and a matching calendar with scenes from the different cities. A strong hint from my sister to visit her while she is living in Siena. @Astro June 12th, eh? Hmmmm. I was trying to pick a date to head back up the Gale River Trail, spend the night at the Galehead Hut, then hike SOBO to Franconia Notch. Maybe we can cross paths. Or share a path. And a nip or two.

Quote from rhjanes: “Blantons is good stuff. I bought it and a bottle of Eagle Rare at the same time. I actually like the Eagle Rare better. ” Yeah... I'm wondering how much of the $62 is for the fancy bottle, horsey stopper and embroidered drawstring bag. We shall see. At least I can taste the subtle cognac flavorings in Angel's Envy to justify the higher cost.

And a nip of bourbon for each summit. ” Now there's an excellent idea I never would of thought of.Is there a brand or special kind of bourbon that's better for hiking with than others? ” I've found that most hikers don't get too particular about what's in the bottle after a hearty climb. Sox and I always repeat our favorite toast from Easy Rider: "Nip, nip, nip... Fir…

Around 30 years ago, I petitioned my new bride for a glass whiskey decanter. She replied with a firm "No!" There was no reason I needed to have booze waiting on the counter when I came home from work. 30 years later, I guess she has seen that I'm not prone to drinking on a daily basis. Opened this Christmas gift today: appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…b0c60646a7eb96e9e86614261 So far, so good. No leaks of the Elijah Craig. • Quote from odd man out: “Have looked at the Mini. Can't you send messages without a linked keyboard device but it's just kind of a pain? And can't the standard pre-set messages be sent? ” With the Mini and my original 1.5 unit, I could send 1 of 3 pre-written messages directly from the unit without using my phone. My hiking messages were: 1. Covered the intended miles and all is good. 2. Stopped early but I'll try to make up the miles tomorrow. 3. Ran into a non life threatening situation and th…

  • What I found interesting is that my original inReach had the same issue. Bought it, followed the instructions to connect it to my computer to check for firmware updates, and killed it. DeLorme quickly replaced it and all was good for many years. At the time, I figured I had a bad unit, but maybe there is a coding flaw that a missing bit or two during downloads can cause a failure. I got mine to keep my wife happy - she's a chronic worrier and didn't like the times I was riding my motorcycle in t…

  • Not sure if I should be grateful or suspicious... My DeLorme inReach for Smartphones died after I received an email notice of a firmware update and installed said update. Garmin bought the inReach line from DeLorme, so I spent time working with Garmin's tech support folks in an attempt to bring it back to life. Nothing worked, so the Garmin rep offered me a 50% discount on any of the new Garmin inReach models. Just got my shiny new Explorer+ yesterday. So... should I be thrilled that Garmin stoo…

Well, the boy enjoyed his first game in Cameron but was kinda surprised how tight the seats were arranged. He said it was a major effort to get his phone out of his pocket for pictures: stand up, turn sideways, keep elbows tucked, remove phone, sit down.

My son and a bunch of his Duke grad school classmates banded together to apply for student tickets. They knew that only a few would be successful, so they set up a 'ticket draft'. Everyone would get an equal quantity of tickets, but the people with successful applications would get first dibs in each round of the draft. My boy was one of the successful applicants, so he's going to the Duke - Indiana game this evening. He also picked the Duke - UNC game (imagine that). Next year, he said he can s…
