  • Quote from rhjanes: “Quote from LIhikers: “I just did some on-line browsing of these devices and found that they certainly aren't cheap. And then you have to pay for the service too. Maybe when I retire and am working on my 3 bucket list adventures 1. Bicycle across the country 2. Finish hiking the A.T. 3. Hike from New York to my son's place in Ohio ” I bought mine to keep family happy with me being out of any cell service and no way to summon help. Wife loves it as she gets two text a day with…

  • Quote from odd man out: “Have looked at the Mini. Can't you send messages without a linked keyboard device but it's just kind of a pain? And can't the standard pre-set messages be sent? ” With the Mini and my original 1.5 unit, I could send 1 of 3 pre-written messages directly from the unit without using my phone. My hiking messages were: 1. Covered the intended miles and all is good. 2. Stopped early but I'll try to make up the miles tomorrow. 3. Ran into a non life threatening situation and th…

  • What I found interesting is that my original inReach had the same issue. Bought it, followed the instructions to connect it to my computer to check for firmware updates, and killed it. DeLorme quickly replaced it and all was good for many years. At the time, I figured I had a bad unit, but maybe there is a coding flaw that a missing bit or two during downloads can cause a failure. I got mine to keep my wife happy - she's a chronic worrier and didn't like the times I was riding my motorcycle in t…

  • Not sure if I should be grateful or suspicious... My DeLorme inReach for Smartphones died after I received an email notice of a firmware update and installed said update. Garmin bought the inReach line from DeLorme, so I spent time working with Garmin's tech support folks in an attempt to bring it back to life. Nothing worked, so the Garmin rep offered me a 50% discount on any of the new Garmin inReach models. Just got my shiny new Explorer+ yesterday. So... should I be thrilled that Garmin stoo…

Well, the boy enjoyed his first game in Cameron but was kinda surprised how tight the seats were arranged. He said it was a major effort to get his phone out of his pocket for pictures: stand up, turn sideways, keep elbows tucked, remove phone, sit down.

My son and a bunch of his Duke grad school classmates banded together to apply for student tickets. They knew that only a few would be successful, so they set up a 'ticket draft'. Everyone would get an equal quantity of tickets, but the people with successful applications would get first dibs in each round of the draft. My boy was one of the successful applicants, so he's going to the Duke - Indiana game this evening. He also picked the Duke - UNC game (imagine that). Next year, he said he can s…

I painstakingly type the guidebook landmarks into a spreadsheet for each section. It's a lot easier for me to reach into my pocket and pull out a folded sheet (protected by a Zip-Lok) than to remove my pack, dig out my phone, fire it up, and launch Guthook. Of course, there are those stretches of trail with no landmarks for miles. That's when I consult with Guthook to convince myself I'm making progress. I like the detail and history contained in the guidebooks. My partner Smoking Sox is a Gutho…

What's for dinner? Well since it's November, the only possible answer is a Gobblerito from Mad Mex! Mrs. Tortoise and I drove 100 miles each way on Saturday to the closest Mad Mex in Wynnewood PA and had them for lunch. Then we ordered another pair to go and had them for dinner last night. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…334fe63d47a7e4e5c4f23ec08 Mad Mex’s massive burrit-o-plenty is back! Quote from odd man out: “Quote from Astro: “I used to live in Singapore and loved it. Hard to imagine some leaving there and wanting to go to Newark. ” I take it back. EWR-SIN is the longest flight. SIN-EWR is 40 minutes faster due to a tail wind. I guess if you're flying to EWR, it just SEEMS longer. Lucky you getting to spend time in Singapore. I keep thinking that I will go trekking in Nepal someday and the trip could easily involve a long layover in Singaore (or Hong Kong, or Bangkok, or Ist…

Grilled a butterflied pork loin on Saturday while the wife whipped up a Caesar salad and cauliflower rice. Enjoyed a pork loin sandwich last night. My local supermarket is closing and we saw pre-cut cedar planks (packs of 4) in the meat & seafood department. Bought all of them for 10% off. Now we just need to drive 15 miles to Wegman's to buy good salmon.

The scoring sign for Tiger's threesome at #12 showed: Woods -9 Spieth E Fowler -1 One of the Tiger-Bots looked at it and loudly proclaimed "Oh... Tiger's in 9th place now and one of the other guys is in first." On the 13th tee, Tiger hit an iron on the short 385-yard par 4. The same Tiger-Bot informed the gallery that it must be a par 3 because Tiger hit an iron. Someone corrected her that it was actually a par 4 but she refused to believe it. After all, if Tiger hits an iron, it absolutely MUST…

I get disgusted with the TV coverage of Tiger... On #15, Tiger flat-out chunked his 2nd shot. The gallery groaned and Tiger hung his head as his ball came up well short of the green. When I got home and watched the TV coverage, the commentator said "Tiger chose to lay up with his 2nd shot." Don't get me started on the Tiger Woods roving gallery. Bunch of ignorant jagoffs idolizing a guy because he used to win a lot. Pushing & shoving to get to the ropes on each hole, then cheering & running to t…
