Sorry....got a little carried away with my monologue.

Has anyone done a food cache on the FHT? I have a few places in mind. It doesn’t seem possible that an ammo box would be 100% safe from bears. Do you really just stash it next to a tree or something?

And maybe I’m just being a baby. If I could start a fire when it’s damp outside, I might feel better. But that’s one skill that eludes me and probably always will.

I found a video journal of someone’s January hike and temp got down to 15*...which doesn’t worry me now that I have the warm bag...but it also rained and that does bother me. Getting everything damp and then having cold temps.

I’m thinking about hiking the FHT in January. The temps don’t worry me but rain + cold causes some concern. Maybe I should only do half, just in case it sucks? Or plan for half and keep hiking if the weather is good? Maybe no plan is the best plan?

The best part was sticking my finger in the middle of the dough and spinning it around to make the hole.

Bagels have been on my learn-to-make list so decided to make them today. They were surprisingly easy and turned out really good. The outside is chewy but not tough and the inside is soft. Fresh bread, hot out of the oven, is one of the best things in life. I didn’t add any spices or seeds since this was the first batch but I’ll start experimenting with different toppings and flavors. (And try to make them more aesthetically pleasing).

I made scones using 1/2 White Lily and 1/2 all purpose flour, 2 cups of each. (Sorry, I think my previous post says I use bread flour but that isn’t true) Anyway, the scones rose much higher than normal when baking. My eyes bulged when I saw them...worried they would be too fluffy but they are great. The texture is about the same as normal but maybe li…

It pales in comparison to the Air Force Museum near Dayton, Ohio. That reminds of the first time I saw Niagara Falls after just …

  • Quote from Wise Old Owl: “Well I am enthusiastic about putting this together,,,, and that is a lot of happy when it comes to this old curmudgeon. ” Yeah, I think the white lily could replace the cake flour and maybe even the bread flour. Cake flour has a low protein content and is made from sort winter wheat...the same as White Lily. Y’all have me craving biscuits, maybe I’ll make some on Saturday.

This bag is like sleeping on a cloud, I love it! I tried it out last night on my deck in 28* with snow flurries and stayed toasty warm. The test was only for an hour and it was so comfy, I nearly fell asleep. If I ever get a day off, I’ll set up the tent and try it all night. Y’all have no idea how happy this makes me.

  • I’ve got some White Lily but don’t use it much. I’ll have to try it in my scones. Obviously, I have a baking problem.

  • Quote from Wise Old Owl: “I am so glad as a group you took a little notice on the article! Occasionally I feel a little ignored. This article impacted me so much I drove for an hour into Maryland to pick up 2 pounds of White Lilly and I am not a southerner. We have made two batches and my wife is clearly confused. both batches were baked and turned out well and were not hockypucks. We are adjusting the recipe. My thoughts are to adjust the recipe to Scones eventually. Huge thanks! CANT WAIT TO A…
