  • Candlepin Bowling

...speaking of fun nights out in MD a long time ago... My good friend was getting married (probably around 1980). Everyone went out to a crab house in Annapolis (awesome). Then the guys went to some redneck bar for a bachelor's party. One of the guys in the wedding party put a boatload of quarters in the juke box and played Whip It by Devo over and over. The regulars were not too happy. Maybe the closest I've come to being murdered.

I grew up in between DC and Baltimore, but closer to DC. However I once went with a group to a polka hall somewhere in the "Balmer" area. It was a hoot. It was probably around the late 1970's.

I've heard of candle pin bowling but never seen it or done it. However I do remember duck pin bowling when I was growing up in the DC area in the 60s and 70s. I even recall the local TV station would broadcast duck pin tournaments. Because the balls are smaller, it's good for young kids.

Quote from jimmyjam: “We're having wine with our hot dogs tonight. Does that mean we're classy rednecks or just confused rednecks? ” Depends what kind of wine it is! Personally, I am on a quest to find the best Chili Dog in the Grand Rapids. In MI, chili dogs are kind of a big deal. Locally known as a Coney, and each city has its own variety. A GR Dog is a hot dog (preferably all beef with natural casing) with Detroit-style chili, onions, mustard, ketchup and its defining topping - shredded dill…

The Gävle Goat hasn't burned yet. In a tradition going back to 1966, the town of Gävle (YEAH vluh) Sweden builds the world largest Julbock (Christmas goat) in the town square. A Julbock is a traditional Swedish Christmas decoration made of straw (I have three at home). However the Gävlebocken is a monster at 13 meters tall. He is quite the tourist attraction, attracting over 100,000 visitors per year and has his own Instagram account. instagram.com/gavlebocken/ However, the town of Gävle has a p…

The weather forecast for the last two days was to be sunny. It wasn't. Each year I got through three phases of weather dissatisfaction. In December, I'm sick of cloudy days so I don't care if it's cold, as long as it's sunny. by March, I'm sick of cold days so I don't car if it's raining, as long as it's warm. by April, I'm sick of rainy days so I don't care if it's cloudy, as long as it stops raining.

I was reading that there is now a market for upscale fancy ice for serious whiskey drinkers. They are special devices for making large clear spherical pieces of ice for your drinks. A sphere has the smallest surface area for any given volume, so the theory that an ice sphere (rather than ice cube) will melt more gradually and keep your drink from becoming prematurely diluted. There is also a trick to make the ice cube (or sphere) completely clear. I don't think that serves no useful purpose othe…

Ug Plus the cloudiest November on record (and November is the cloudiest month of the year). ” Must be the Global Warming. ” It actually could. More heat in the atmosphere creates more energy (water vapor, storms, etc...). Energy in the atmosphere is represented by greater temperature gradients (difference between hot and cold).

Just finished my Makers Mark. Thought I would replace it with a Rye. Decided to go local and got a bottle of Grey Skies Straight Rye (made in Grand Rapids, MI). I've grown fond of Old Fashioned cocktails so I bought some Bitters to go with it (already had the sugar and orange). I've never had a cocktail at a bar that I liked. All the "specialty" cocktails on the menu are full of silly ingredients that do nothing for me. The only mixed drinks I really like are made with just a few basic ingredien…
