Kathy and I, plus our dog, went for a short walk today, with our dog Tora. It was a 2ish mile walk in a county nature preserve. About 1/2 the trail was along some wet lands with good views of ducks and geese. The other 1/2 was through woods with signs of deer, although we didn't actually see any. Temperature was in the low 40s with no wind and a partly sunny sky. It was a pretty perfect day for a walk.

I guess all this hiking, and other activities, are wearing out our bodies. I put up with some near constant aches and pains. My job doesn't help any either, I often wind up in odd positions that stress body parts or handle very heavy parts. But all the activity sure beats being a couch potato

Now remember that year. Kathy and I hiked in during the night, in pouring rain, arriving at camp about 1AM. When we woke up everybody was packed up and heading out. I guess all the coffee was gone because I don't remember any real coffee. What really impressed me was them carrying Coyote as well as all their camping gear

  • whats the weather where you are?

I've recently read some articles that say we're heading into a period of solar minimum and that it will lead to a colder than usual winter. Starting around 1645 there was a period of about 75 years of solar minimum which lead to an extended cold period which played havoc with the growing seasons and caused food shortages. Usually the solar cycles are much shorter than that, but who knows. I guess TJ got her new, warmer sleeping bag just in time!

Yep, by wearing warm clothing I can use my 25 degree Montbell down bag into the teens. And like others have said, having a good, insulating ground pad is very important, or use multiple pads. Foam under an inflatable works well. I've heard it said that you should have at least an R value of 5 and my experience proves that out. My NeoAir All Season pad is about 5 if I remember right. Put together what you think will work in the cold and then sleep out in the yard to try it out. That way if you ar…

I just got a new rain jacket yesterday. I've always used a Marmot Precip and stayed with that choice again. Instead of the usual Blue color I've gotten in the past, this time I got a color called Tangelo. It's kind of a washed out Orange. I figured that's better than blue during hunting season. It's not as vibrant as blaze orange but is more visible than the blue. Although, during fall's leaf season it's gonna blend right in. The first web site I checked was Campmor and they had the jacket for f…

Yesterday my wife Kathy and I went to visit a niece who is attending Pace University which is a little north of New York City. The leaves are changing and may be at their peak for beauty. She, and her mother, were amazed, they are from Austin, TX and they don't get that there it seems.
