Finally! It cooled off today. It’s awesome. Don’t have to turn the thermostat down to sleep tonight, can open the windows.

Recently, I tried New Belgium Hemperor. It’s brewed with hemp seeds and is supposed to taste like “cannabis terpenes”. I don’t know what terpenes are but it was very tasty. It sounds gimmicky, and maybe it is, but I will definitely drink it again. Anyone else tried it?

  • Thank you for the excellent report! I’m still using the original Sawyer and decided on my last hike to upgrade (downsize?) to the mini. Now I’m considering the Versa Flow.

  • Unfortunately, I wasnt able to get an appointment with Rob but the Cascadias did well on my recent hike...about 80% better. They allowed me to hike a 15.7 mile day with minimal discomfort. I was diligent with applying body glide and foot powder and ended up with only a small blister on my bunion.

My weight crept up a little this summer, 5-6 lbs. I was keeping track but didn’t get concerned until it was staying at the high end of acceptable. So, I’ve been watching my diet, sporadically keeping track of calories, decreased alcohol, and I’m down 3 lbs. It doesn’t sound like much, but it freaked me out, thinking all the hard work that I’ve done over the years was being undone!

I haven’t made jam in years. In a way, I don’t want to. My sister is an expert, strawberry jam maker and my mom makes delicious pear jam from her pear tree. It’s so special to eat their jam that making my own might ruin it.

I salvaged the remaining batter this morning by adding one egg, 2 cups bread flour, 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1 tsp baking powder and enough milk to get the consistency that I like. I was winging it, just added things that sounded like they would work. Don’t have the foggiest idea why i threw in the oats. The scones were okay. They are probably closer to authentic than my normal recipe..dryish, no sweetness, slightly crumbly. They were good with butter. Tomorrow, I’ll use butter and jam. Yum.

Moving on from zombies to medieval time travel. It’s actually pretty good. If you like history, philosophy, and religion mixed with a little sci-fi (paranormal?), you will like it. The Outcasts of Time by Ian Mortimer.

I bought some almond flour last month and decided to make scones with it. Almond flour is a common ingredient in gluten-free diets (which I am not on). Its nuttiness seemed like a good idea for cinnamon raisin scones. I added cake flour to help it along. The batter was so wet, it was a messy job getting it into the scone pan. They crumbled into dust and were terrible. Ugh! All my wasted ingredients. They had to be dumped in the trash.
