Quote from Astro: “Had a scare last night. Went out to my garage in the dark to quickly grab something out of a vehicle while wearing Crocs. Did not see a wet spot and slipped/flew through the air and landed on my right side. My knee was bent back, but my hip took the brunt of the fall. Only thing going through my mind then was had I just destroyed all the progress of my surgery and rehab. Wife had me take 4 ibuprofen, ice knee, and went to bed. Fortunately I had a PT rehab appointment this morn…

Right now I am oh so glad I couldn't go with Kathy. Today I had to make an unplanned trip to the dentist and then oral surgeon to have a tooth removed. Every day this week it became more and more painful until it was evident that it wasn't gonna get any better by itself. An x-ray showed there was a massive infection under the tooth, which was almost all filling and had already had a root canal, years ago. At least it was a good excuse for a couple days off work. On the down side, I didn't ride m…

Kathy sent our son a text yesterday with where she'd been and where she was going. Evidently she had a chance to do some canoeing on some pond. Our dog is pretty good about being in a canoe or row boat .

    Post

Kathy and I haven't stayed at any of the huts because we have a dog with us. We do enjoy stopping at the huts for snacks, drinks, lunch and to use the toilet. I don't think the price is unreasonable considering what it takes to build and operate those places. Going across the presidentials we camped down hill from Madison Hut, at the Valley Way camp site. In the morning we stopped at Madison Hut, to use toilets and fill water bottles. Turns out they had plenty of left over breakfast and let us b…

This past Sunday Kathy left for another one of her solo backpacking trips. Not really solo though as she has our dog, Tora, with her. I'm not sure who enjoys these jaunts more, Kathy or Tora. Before they left all I knew was that they were headed to New York's Catskill mountains, as Kathy couldn't decide which trails she wanted to hike. Later on Sunday I got a text saying that she was at a trailhead on route 206. That's all I expect to hear from her until she gets home this coming weekend. Photos…

Quote from Traffic Jam: “Visited the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Kennesaw National Battlefield. I was very moved at the MLK, Jr. site. I really needed to hear his messages of love and service. The battlefield was fun but crowded and I wasn’t able to hike the loop. “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” Martin Luther King, Jr. ” Thos…

Since the heat of summer has set in, commuting by bicycle has become a real love hate thing. In the morning, going to work, isn't bad because it's not too hot yet. This morning it was 67 when I left the house. Riding home, with temps in the high 80s, low 90s , it's no fun, after doing physical work all day in the heat. I'll keep it up, doing 2 days a week.

Quote from IMScotty: “Quote from Astro: “Not Without Peril: 150 Years of Misadventure on the Presidential Range of New Hampshire by Nicolas Howe While it can be depressing at times since as described in the title things do not usually end well. But as George Santayana said "those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it", and that I believe that is more the value of the book. Showing what not to do and how improvements have been made over time. Also interesting due to the authors …

Here's another car tip. If you drive a 1970s VW bus try and stay off the Verazzano Narrows Bridge. While stopped in bumper to bumper traffic we got hit in the back. The damage will require me to replace the rear bumper and straighten out the trailer hitch. All in all more of an inconvenience than a real problem. I already have a used bumper laying around. The other guy's Toyota had more damage than us, do to the trailer hitch.

We haven't had any measurable rain in well over a month and that doesn't look to be changing either. Fires everywhere. It's gross. ” Yikes, be careful!
