Tomorrow, my wife and I are off for three days at Glacier NP. We are staying at the newly renovated Many Glacier Lodge. I am a sucker for classic NP lodges. We have also stayed at Big Meadows (SNP), Rock Harbor Lodge (IRNP), Yosemite Lodge at the Falls, and Grand Canyon Lodge (north rim). We have visited, but not stayed at Paradise Lodge (MRNP), Zion Lodge, Bryce Canyon Lodge, Awahane (YosNP), Colter Bay Village (GTNP), and Canyon Lodge, Roosevelt Lodge, and all the lodges at Old Faithful (YelNP…

I've never heard of anyone except me having a saliva gland infection before. When I was a kid, anytime I would eat something very sweet, my throat would swell. As a result, I never ate a lot of candy growing up. It would happen probably a few times a week, was rather uncomfortable and sometimes a little painful, but mostly just annoying and ignored. One day when I was in High School, I ate a piece of candy, my throat swelled and never went down. Then it got quite painful. I went to the doctor an…

  • I found myself home alone at lunch time the other day and decided to make some mac a cheese. I think it was a box of Annies. I added some hot dogs and was really disappointed. I usually like hot dogs, but this combo just didn't work. That night we had tacos for dinner. For lunch the next day I added the leftover taco meat to the leftover mac and cheese (hotdogs gone), and it was awesome. My basic taco meat filling is saute minced onions, hot pepper, and garlic in a little olive oil, brown the gr…

Quote from Traffic Jam: “Time for a beer. How about Bell’s Oberon? ” I always find it interesting when people around the country drink what is for us just another local microbrewery. I've been to stores on the east coast where half the beers in the cooler are from home.

Only once have I made a "highlight reel" worthy catch of a foul ball, although I wasn't holding a baby. Our minor league ballpark has a lawn section along the foul lines in the outfield where you are pretty close to the field. Years ago we were sitting in the lawn when the batter hits a frozen rope line drive right at me. I just stuck up my hand and caught it caught it. They put me on the big screen grimacing in pain after the catch. Got a good cheer from the crowd.

After a trip I soak my filter in white vinegar and the flush with distilled water. I guess adding a little bleach wouldn't hurt. BTW, I saw these filters the other day. It the HydroBlu Versa Flow Filter. It seems to have pretty much the same specs a Sawyer Mini. However I have seen a few reviews by people who have used Sawyer filters and say this one has better flow rates. What attracts me is that it has female 28mm threads for both the dirty and clean water connections. This would allow me to a…

  • I remember the Swanson TV Dinners from back in the 1960's. They were the ultimate in convenience foods. Plus we didn't have to eat at the dining room table. That was a real breakthrough in convenience food. My wife inherited a couple of antique cookbooks from family members. One is from the early 1900's and the other from the late 1800's. Reading them is quite interesting. The one from the 1800's uses no commercial processed foods at all. By the early 1900's people were using canned goods in the…
