Will Kathy be able to post highlights/pics from her hike? ” Nope, no pastries.............this time I doubt Kathy will make a trip report, she's not much of a computer person. She hasn't downloaded the photos from her camera yet, but when she does I'll try to post any good ones. I can tell you she started on a Sunday an…

I got my new Surly back from the shop with a new rear wheel, to repair the damage that I did. I haven't ridden it yet, maybe in a couple days. I can't ride right now because I fell and landed on my tail bone, and it hurts.

We'll spend the night there and then hike out to the car the next day.

Quote from odd man out: “I've never built a fire while backpacking. But for car camping, I might find a use. I wonder if you could just use a hollow carbon fiber golf club shaft. ” After you cut off the head and the handle. That sure would be one expensive straw! And like others, I don't make a fire when backpacking. It's bad enough that I blow up my sleeping mat.

Quote from Rasty: “Between moving, divorce, new girlfriend, quitting job, building my camper van and the wedding this is going to be the least well researched section hike of my life. Leaving Monday and I haven't done anything. ” Enjoy the trip, it'll all fall into place once it starts. Plus, enjoy the new life adventure you're setting out on. And like Astro said, avoid the NYC area as much as possible.

I'm not a big fan of electronic technology. I put off getting a computer as long as I could. I finally got one when our first son went off to college. I knew he'd never write us a letter, would only call home if he needed money or something else, but figured he might send us an occasional e-mail. I still don't have a smart phone, my old flip phone serves my needs just fine. I'm thinking of making the change before we do a cross the USA bicycle ride in a few years. All that said, I did detect a c…

Even a regular, cotton bandana can be weted to help cool the head. And drinking copious amounts is something I have to do too, or I have problems. I fact, I've been to the hospital twice do to heat related problems. That was like 40 years ago and had nothing to do with hiking, but in each case I was told that I was dehydrated because I didn't drink enough. So keep cool as you can and keep hydrated, easier said then done though when you're out hiking.

I got a text from Kathy on Sunday night telling me where she was going to camp. I was surprised because her plan was to leave her phone turned off, and buried in her pack until late in the week when she would tell me where to pick her up. I didn't look at my phone yesterday after I started work and forgot it on top of my tool box when I came home from work, so I don't know if there's more texts from her. I hope not, I hope she leaves it turned off. Neither of us are big cell phone people, in fac…

Since we weren't going back to the AT in Maine this year my wife, Kathy, decided to go out hiking without me. We spent this morning driving to northern CT and found a trailhead on East Street ( or is it East Road?), to a side trail which leads to the AT. Kathy, and our dog Tora, started walking at 1:25 in the afternoon headed south on the AT. We've already hiked CT but she wanted to get out and hike. Later in the week she'll get in touch with me and let me know where she plans to finish. I'll dr…
