Grade inflation is a problem and agree sometimes determining who the top student is academically is a matter of splitting hairs. Maybe the commencement speakers should be chosen based on some other criteria. I know that I would like to hear what the kid who has enlisted to serve his country after graduation has to say.

The errant hot dog was wrapped in duct tape (to keep it intact) and launched by the team's mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, as part of a routine seen at games for years. Unfortunately this ti…

Quote from Ewok11: “I haven't been by here in what feels like forever. New job of three months and I think I'm finally over the jetlag portion of adjusting to the hours. I decided since my commute each direction is only 3.23 miles from door to door that I would start biking or walking most days. I tried biking twice and after way too many people almost running over me and one situation where I had to hastily ditch my bike, I've gone to just walking. The problem here isn't even that they can't se…

Quote from Astro: “Day 6 7.6m to Garfield Ridge Shelter. Storm with rain last night but I slept well as the lightning did not wake me. Cooler today, so for the first time I wore long pants and my fleece top, gloves, and bennie. Got off early by 6pm. First problem of the day was when I slipped and gashed my leg open. Instant pain and my pants leg covered with blood. First reaction was to wipe blood away, but it just kept bleeding, so quickly got leg horizontal so it would clot and then put band-a…

Quote from odd man out: “Nice. I'm curious, what countries were the foreigners from, mosly? The last time we were in the SW (Grand Canyon) we met lots of Germans and a Finnish motorcycle gang on a road trip from Chicago to LA. ” Germany was number one. I liked the German hikers, they were purists like me "Ve will hike every step" There was also a older lady from Switzerland, a girl from Poland, two Irish hikers', a woman from England, Koreans, and many more. Quote from Traffic Jam: “Wow, that sounds painful. Did you use gaiters? On my couple of short, PCT hikes, my thought was that dirty girl gaiters were a must due to the sand/dust. They don’t totally cover the toe-end of my shoes but they do a good job of keeping out a lot of debris. ” I don't wear gators. I noticed that some hikers did, some didn't. I'm not sure the hikers that didn't were any worse off, but it is something I should try.

So on this years PCT section hike I had severe foot problems. Not blisters really, more like whole sections of skin rubbing off. It wasn't my shoes and I do not normally have foot problems. The issue I am afraid was lack of cleanliness. The trail is dusty, needless to say, and the grit gets ground into your socks turning them into #220 sandpaper. The arches of my feet, bottom and tops of my toes were flayed. Normally on my hikes I work with two pair of Darn Tough socks. The ones I am wearing tha…

PCT 2018 Section Report: Got back a few days ago from a three week section. I had hoped to be out there longer, but as usual I missed my family and decided three weeks was enough. Started at the southern terminus (Campo) and hiked to Big Bear Lake California for 266 PCT miles. I now have about 1000 miles total. Looks like I am four years in on a ten year plan. In terms of miles covered this is my worst effort yet. For comparison last year I did 350 miles in he same amount of time. This is the de…
