Quote from Drybones: “... single digits at night, high wind, snow, and deep post holing over Mt Rogers with slush in the holes. ” Gee that sounds like an overnighter that Kathy and I did last winter. We went to the Telephone Pioneer shelter, in New York, from route 202. Crossing one field we were sinking in up to mid thigh and every step turned the snow into wet slush. Then it got really cold once the sun went down. We actually slept in the shelter instead of putting up our tent so we'd be out o…

Maybe it will put me in the Christmas spirit. ” Have fun and enjoy yourself, that's all that matters. ” I was still nervous but had fun and really enjoyed it. I may not sound good, but playing music fills something inside of me, just like hiking does. ” In that case the recital was a success, congratulations!

Quote from Astro: “Makes me wish I knew about the AT when I was young and thru hiked it like Max Patch and Mountain Mike. ” We did know about the AT when we were younger, but raising a family and working all the overtime I could get kept me from doing much more than a walk in our local county park. So now I'm doing the best that I can and enjoying what I do get to do. I'm not going to spill tears over the past but try and figure out how to enjoy the future.

Quote from jimmyjam: “Quote from TrafficJam: “I've got all of y'all beat. But the entire story can only be told in person (around the campfire and with good bourbon) so that I can properly impart the horror of the whole episode. ” Ok! I've got the good bourbon. Where do you want to build that fire? ” Come to the MLK weekend extravaganza, bring your bourbon and your story, I'll build the fire.

  • Quote from Jake Ace: “In America, alas, beauty has become something you drive to, and nature an either/or proposition--either you ruthlessly subjugate it, as at Tocks Dam and a million other places, or you deify it, treat it as something holy and remote, a thing apart, as along the Appalachian Trail. Seldom would it occur to anyone on either side that people and nature could coexist to their mutual benefit--that, say, a more graceful bridge across the Delaware River might actually set off the gr…

Quote from TrafficJam: “It turns out that I forgot to check my tire before putting on the spare tube last week. I had a sliver of metal in the tire that also punctured the spare. I always forget something. There was also a piece of metal in the front tire. ” Sounds like you need to pick a different route.

  • Took a walk today

Not today, but me, Kathy, and our dog Tora took a walk this past Saturday. We went up to Harriman State Park and parked on the east side at the Diltz (sp?) Road trailhead parking lot. We arrived about 10:30, changed our shoes, adjusted our clothing, and hoisted our packs by about 10:50. From there we walked north until we got to File Factory Hollow and headed west. About 3/4 of the way along the hollow we left the trail and bushwacked to a woods road that I can't remember the name of and headed …

But it’s weird trying to convince your brain to do multiple things. If hiking and knitting, my feet move much slower, like rubbing your belly and patting your head. ” I have trouble convincing my brain to do one thing at a time

My wife Kathy and I have 2 things planned for 2018 In April we'll hike either the Loyalsock Trail in Pennsylvania or the AT from Penn Mar park in PA to Harper's Ferry, WV. The determining factor will be if a friend, who is just getting into hiking and backpacking decides to come with us or not. If she's going to come then it will be the AT. Then during the summer, probably July, we'll be back in Maine to hike more of the AT. Last year we left off at route 27, at Stratton, so we'll hike north fro…
